Bengaluru stray dogs to feast on daily biryani: BBMP’s Rs 2.8 crore plan faces backlash

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Jul 10: In a first-of-its-kind initiative in India, the Karnataka government and Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) have launched a Rs 2.8 crore project to provide daily chicken and egg biryani meals to stray dogs across eight city zones.

The ambitious scheme aims to feed roughly 600-700 stray dogs per zone, targeting a total of 5,000 dogs initially—out of Bengaluru’s estimated 3 lac street dogs. The BBMP has called for tenders to supply this special biryani meal, stirring a heated debate among citizens and officials alike.

Critics argue the plan raises serious questions about priorities, highlighting the city’s ongoing struggles with inadequate basic infrastructure like roads, water, food, and housing. Many see this lavish feeding programme for stray dogs as an extravagant use of taxpayer money, while supporters view it as a compassionate move for animal welfare.

This controversial project shines a spotlight on the fine line between humane treatment of animals and responsible urban governance, sparking fierce discussions on whether Bengaluru’s resources are being fairly balanced between people and its four-legged residents.

Instead of fixing the core issue of stopping stray animals on roads by entrusting care and accountability to pet owners our govt is encouraging more animals onto the roads. There are so many humans sleeping of the road and foot paths, so many needing support from mental health. Our Govt. has forgotten humans.

Instead of feeding stray dogs and allocating funds for their food, a better alternative would have been to vaccinate them and allowing them to be adopted as pets. These animals too seek an owner to take care of them same as breed dogs. This will also solves security concerns for children and old age people. A dog in a house will always be security guard without complains and full time loyalty...

Hopefully it will be implemented well so BBMP can achieve the targets it has set out to, less aggression and less bites. Letting stray dogs go hungry without whiff of food has not done any good to anyone including the public, who have to face their wrath on the roads. If feeding them reduce their aggression, why not. A welcome step. This followed by vaccination and sterilization would certainly go a long way in helping man coexist with these. After all they are living beings too and have a right to live and right to access to food. Kudos!!!

Great initiative. These hungry voiceless animals and their pain always come second to other "high priority" projects. As a country we will never run out of "more important " things to do what's more important than feeding the hungry? Wonderful move. Fully support it.

Blame the owners of these voiceless lives that left them on the street to fend for themselves. rather than blaming the concerned for this act. Owning a dog is not child's play but a responsibility. And if you cannot take the responsibility don't even think about keeping pets at home

I am not against dogs or any animals, the increasing number of stray dogs in our communities has become a serious issue that can no longer be ignored. There have been numerous incidents where stray dogs have attacked people, often targeting the most vulnerable among us, such as children and the elderly. Its an safety issue.
