Mangaluru: Ladyhill Victoria PU College celebrates Vanamahotsava, World Environment Day

Mangaluru, Jul 21: Sustainable living and Protection of Mother Earth should be the prime duty of every citizen and instilling such thoughts in young minds should be a part of the curriculum.

‘Verdant Victorians’ the Eco Forum of Ladyhill Victoria Girls’ Composite PU College has been taking various measures for creating environmental awareness among the students from the very beginning of the academic year.

Painting competition based on nature theme like Walk in the Jungle and Nature’s revenge was arranged in the month of June. Significance of World Environment Day and its theme was highlighted during an assembly on June 5. Display of articles on class bulletin boards on environment, sticking of bills to 'Save Water, Save Electricity' all these were a part of the action plan of Eco Forum. Finally on July 18, the festival of planting trees was celebrated where every student council member and staff convener along with the chief guest and principal planted a sapling to make the Earth greener and healthier.

The chief guest Dr Vinaya Chaithanya, coordinator – department of sustainable development and public policy and programme officer – EIACP at Environmental Management and Policy Research Institute, Bengaluru was the resource person to share insights on Climate Change and Plastic menace especially to emphasize the theme of World Environment Day 2025 - End Plastic Pollution. The students were stunned to see the presence of microplastics in food chain just because of the plastic garbage carelessly disposed on land and water and the main cause being modern lifestyle.

She also shared some alternatives a student can adopt to control plastic usage in daily lives. She also explained the recent calamities due to climate change especially the reason being the increase air pollution levels in urban areas.

At the end, the chief guest planted a tree sapling along with principal Sr Sharmila AC in the campus to mark the significance of Vanamahotsava. All the faculty members and Student council joined her during the planting process.

The programme was organised by the members of Eco Forum with the guidance of staff convener Seema Sheikh and Student conveners Riya and Faima Fathima Farhaana. Fathima Rifa, secretary for Junior Red Cross gave the welcome address and Hafsa Umar delivered the vote of thanks. Sara Fathima Risha compered the event.
