Brahmavar, Jul 24: The 89th memorial feast of Blessed Fr R Z Noronha, the first vicar general of St Mary’s Orthodox Syrian Cathedral, Brahmavar, was observed with great devotion and solemnity on July 22 and 23. Blessed Fr R Z Noronha, remembered for shepherding the Orthodox Konkani community in and around Brahmavar for over five decades, was honoured through a series of religious ceremonies and community gatherings.
This year’s feast was sponsored by Mary Lewis and Family, Pandeshwar, Sasthan.
The celebrations commenced on Tuesday, July 22, with a solemn festive Vespers service at St Mary’s Syrian Cathedral, Brahmavar. A ceremonial procession through Brahmavar town, starting from the cathedral, symbolized the faith and devotion of the community. Refreshments were served to all attendees following the procession.

























































































The evening Vespers prayer was led by former vicar general Fr Ramban G M Skaria, vicar general Fr M C Mathai, and assistant vicars. Fr David Crasta delivered an inspiring homily on the saintly life and selfless service of blessed Fr R Z Noronha. The evening service concluded with a benediction.
On Wednesday, July 23, the feast day Holy Mass was celebrated with Fr Ramban G M Skaria as the chief celebrant. He was assisted by assistant vicars Fr Lawrence D'Souza and Fr Abraham Kuriakose. Fr Noel Lewis delivered the festival sermon, he said, “Fr Noronha dedicated his life to social service and fought for social justice. He emphasized the importance of education, encouraging students. He also extended help to the sick, serving and praying for them. If we serve humanity, God will bless us with everything we need.”
Assistant vicars Fr Philip Thomas and Fr Joseph Chako also participated in the festival prayers. The Mass concluded with the final benediction, followed by Vicar General Fr M C Mathai proposing a vote of thanks.
The feast witnessed the active participation of trustee Milton Olivera, secretary Lawrence D’Souza, and members of the managing committee. Food was served to devotees on both days, reflecting the spirit of community and fellowship.
