In 2003, she created history by becoming the first woman from Odisha — and the first married woman in India — to secure the All India Rank-1 in the UPSC Civil Services Examination. Early life and education
Born on June 9, 1977, in Angul, Odisha, Roopa Mishra excelled academically from a young age. She studied at St Joseph’s Girls High School in Cuttack and DAV Public School, Bhubaneswar, before earning a Bachelor of Commerce degree from BJB College. She later completed an MBA at Utkal University, Bhubaneswar.

Support and first attempt success
Her entry into the UPSC journey was strongly influenced by her husband, Anshuman Tripathi, an IIM Calcutta alumnus. With his encouragement, Mishra began preparing while working with the Distance Education Department at Utkal University. Remarkably, she cleared the exam with AIR-1 in her very first attempt, proving that determination and the right support can turn challenges into milestones.
