Colombo, Nov 29: Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath on Saturday expressed heartfelt gratitude to India for extending timely humanitarian assistance under Operation Sagar Bandhu in the aftermath of Cyclone Ditwah. “Thank you, my friend, S. Jaishankar, for the assistance at this hard time,” Herath wrote on X, acknowledging the support provided by the External Affairs Minister.
Former Foreign Minister Ali Sabry also conveyed appreciation for India’s immediate relief efforts, recalling the crucial assistance India had offered during Sri Lanka’s 2022 economic crisis. “Your friendship continues to make a meaningful difference,” he posted on X.

As part of the ongoing aid mission, an Indian Air Force C-130J aircraft carrying around 12 tonnes of relief supplies—including tents, tarpaulins, blankets, hygiene kits, and ready-to-eat food—arrived in Colombo on Saturday. Cyclone Ditwah has caused multiple fatalities and left thousands displaced across Sri Lanka.
EAM S. Jaishankar confirmed the delivery on X, noting that Operation Sagar Bandhu continues to unfold with sustained support for the affected communities.
A day earlier, India had dispatched Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) materials via INS Vikrant and INS Udaygiri, delivering 4.5 tonnes of dry rations, 2 tonnes of fresh rations, and other essential items. The Indian High Commission in Colombo reaffirmed India’s commitment to its Neighbourhood First policy, emphasising solidarity with the Sri Lankan people in their time of need.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier extended condolences to families affected by the cyclone and announced India’s decision to provide comprehensive relief under Operation Sagar Bandhu.
