Mangalore: Fake Vehicle Theft Complaint - Accused Held

Mangalore, Feb 19: Ashok (31) from Rajivnagar in Delantabettu near here, was arrested by the personnel of Bajpe police station on Friday February 17 from Kinnigoli. Ashok has been accused of making a false complaint about the theft of his car, bought under a scheme of the state tourism department for the unemployed. The police say he did so to prefer insurance claim on the car and pocket the claim amount.

Ashok had bought a Tata Indica Car in May 2011 under the quota meant for scheduled caste and tribe beneficiaries in the above scheme. He had complained to the police that his car was found to have been stolen, when it was parked in the parking lot of Kateel Goddess Durgaparameshwari Temple on January 26 this year, when he along with his family members, had gone inside the temple.

During the investigation, the police found that the vehicle reported to have been stolen was very well present. It is said that the accused had parked it at the home of his father-in-law at Sooterpet here, and that installments on the car loan with the bank were being remitted by his father-in-law.

Bajpe police inspector, Dinakar Shetty, acting under the directions of deputy commissioners of police, Mutturaya and Dharmaiah, and guidance of assistant commissioner of police, Puttamadaiah, made the above arrest. The approximate value of the car has been put at Rs 3,60,000. The accused was produced in a court here on Friday.
