Hyderabad, Dec 2: In a landmark move towards empowerment and inclusivity, Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) has inducted 20 transgender personnel into its frontline security team. The recruits, who completed their induction training recently, began duties on Monday across select Metro stations and trains, marking a significant step in strengthening commuter safety—especially for women.
Hyderabad Metro, one of the largest and most advanced urban transit systems in the country, runs across three corridors with 57 stations and caters to nearly five lakh passengers daily. With women forming nearly 30 percent of its ridership, ensuring their safety and comfort remains a top priority for HMRL.

The initiative is aligned with the Telangana government’s commitment to dignity, equal opportunity and the mainstreaming of marginalised communities. Last year, the government began inducting transgender individuals into various public service roles, including positions such as Assistant Traffic Marshals.
HMRL Managing Director Sarfaraz Ahmad hailed the move as both a security upgrade and a strong social message. “The induction of these 20 trained transgender personnel is a source of immense pride for the Hyderabad Metro family. It is more than a security enhancement — it reflects our commitment to social empowerment and the Government of Telangana’s vision for an inclusive society. Their role will be critical in strengthening frontline passenger services and reassuring our women commuters,” he said.
The newly appointed personnel will focus on ensuring passenger well-being, particularly in general areas and ladies-only coaches. They will assist commuters with directions, information and on-ground facilitation, in addition to supporting baggage scanning operations for smooth passenger movement.
As part of the Station Security Support initiative, the transgender security staff will maintain a visible and accessible presence across designated stations, including street-level and concourse areas, helping reinforce a safe and welcoming travel environment for all.
