New Delhi, Dec 4: Swaraj Kaushal, senior lawyer, former Mizoram governor, and husband of the late Union Minister Sushma Swaraj, passed away on Thursday at the age of 73. He is survived by his daughter, BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj, who paid a heartfelt tribute on social media, remembering his affection, discipline, simplicity, patriotism, and patience as guiding lights in her life.
“Your departure has descended upon me as the deepest pain of the heart, but the mind holds onto this belief that you have now reunited with Mother, in the presence of God, in eternal peace,” she wrote. She added that being his daughter was the greatest pride of her life and vowed to carry forward his legacy, values, and blessings.

Kaushal was cremated at the Lodhi Road cremation ground on Thursday evening, with leaders across the political spectrum paying their respects.
Born in Solan on July 12, 1952, Kaushal was a distinguished criminal lawyer educated in Delhi and Chandigarh. He served as Governor of Mizoram from 1990 to 1993 and was a member of Parliament representing Haryana as a leader of the Haryana Vikas Party from 1998 to 2004. He held two terms in the Rajya Sabha, from 1998-99 and 2000-2004.
Kaushal played a crucial role in the signing of the Mizoram Peace Accord in 1986, which ended two decades of insurgency, and served as Mizoram’s first Advocate General in 1987. Early in his legal career, he gained prominence by defending socialist leader George Fernandes in the Baroda dynamite case during the Emergency of 1975–77.
He married Sushma Swaraj in 1975. The couple’s daughter, Bansuri Swaraj, is the current BJP Lok Sabha member from New Delhi. Sushma Swaraj passed away on August 6, 2019, due to cardiac arrest. Kaushal is remembered for his expertise on northeastern India and its insurgency issues, leaving behind a legacy of public service and legal excellence.
