New Delhi, Dec 5: In a gesture reflecting deep cultural ties and mutual respect, Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented a Russian-translated copy of the Bhagavad Gita to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is currently on a two-day visit to India. Sharing the moment on X, PM Modi described the sacred scripture as a source of inspiration for millions across the globe.
“Presented a copy of the Gita in Russian to President Putin. The teachings of the Gita give inspiration to millions across the world,” the Prime Minister posted.

President Putin received a warm welcome upon his arrival at Delhi’s Palam Airport on Thursday evening. Signifying the closeness of the bilateral relationship, both leaders later shared a car ride to the Prime Minister’s residence at Lok Kalyan Marg.
PM Modi expressed his delight over Putin’s visit, calling India-Russia friendship a “time-tested bond” that continues to benefit the people of both nations.
Putin, on his first visit to India in four years, will remain in New Delhi till December 5. During his stay, he is scheduled to hold the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit, aiming to strengthen strategic cooperation in defence, trade, science and technology, and cultural diplomacy.
Former Indian diplomat Arun Singh emphasized that Russia has been a crucial partner, especially in moments where India needed strong political backing, including at the UN Security Council. He reiterated that the defence cooperation between the two nations has played a key role in India’s national security.
Referring to the recent Operation Sindoor against terror elements in Pakistan and PoK, Singh noted the effectiveness of Russian-origin defence systems like the S-400 missile defense system and the BrahMos missile.
Meanwhile, Lydia Kulik, Head of India Studies at the Moscow School of Management, termed the visit both symbolic and strategically significant. She highlighted efforts to expand access for Indian exporters within the Russian market while furthering cooperation across political, defence, and economic sectors.
“India and Russia are looking very positively at their future together,” she said predicting progress in defence deals, humanitarian partnerships and stronger dialogue on global geopolitical issues.
