Mangaluru: Children and teachers take centre stage on sixth day of novena

Media Release

Mangaluru, Jan 11: The sixth day of the Infant Jesus Novena, dedicated to children and teachers, was observed with deep devotion and vibrant participation at the Infant Jesus Shrine, Bikarnakatte.

The day’s reflections were centred on the theme, “Father, if you will, remove this chalice,” drawing inspiration from the spiritual teachings of St John of the Cross and inviting the faithful to reflect on trust, surrender, and perseverance in the face of life’s trials.

The day was marked by a series of novena masses, with nine eucharistic celebrations offered in multiple languages, reflecting the inclusive and welcoming spirit of the shrine and drawing devotees from diverse backgrounds.

The 10:30 am solemn Mass was presided over by Rt Dr Henry D’Souza, Bishop of Bellary. Following the eucharistic celebration, a special eucharistic adoration was held, with focused prayers offered for the well-being, growth, and future of children. As an expression of fellowship and Christian charity, a common meal (Anna Santarpane) was served to all the devotees present.

A special highlight of the day was the open-air evening Mass, which added a joyful and devotional character to the celebrations. Children, dressed as the Infant Jesus and Mother Mary, actively participated in the liturgy, assuming various roles with reverence and enthusiasm.

The Mass was presided over by Fr Stephen Lobo and was specially dedicated to the Carmelite priests serving in Canada. A children’s choir further enriched the celebration, creating a deeply prayerful and festive atmosphere.

The first Mass of the day at 6 am was celebrated by Fr Vincent Sequeira, secretary of the Bible Commission in the Diocese of Mangaluru, followed by the 7:30 am Mass celebrated by Fr Deep Fernandes. The 9 am Mass was presided over by Fr Joseph Martis, parish priest of Derebail Church. The 1 pm Mass was celebrated by Fr Ajith Rodrigues, OCD, dean of Dhyanavana.

The 5 pm English Mass was celebrated by Fr Rathan Almeida, director of Dhyanavana, Mysuru. The 6 pm open-air Mass, featuring the special participation of children dressed as the Infant Jesus and Mother Mary, brought a joyful and lively dimension to the liturgy. The final Mass of the day in Kannada at 7:45 p.m. was celebrated by Fr Joseph Pinto, episcopal vicar for Religious in the Diocese of Chikkamagaluru.

The sixth day of the Novena thus became a beautiful blend of prayer, childlike joy, and deep spiritual reflection, leaving a lasting impression on the faithful and underlining the Shrine’s special concern for children and those entrusted with their formation.
