Mangalore, Feb 25: To mark 25 years of the presence of women in St Aloysius College, a national-level seminar on 'Women as catalysts of change’ was organized at the College premises here on Saturday February 25.

"Am overwhelmed, as I always wanted to attend an event like this," said Stanly K V, founder of Odanadi, Mysore, in his inaugural address.

"Everyone has potential and equal strength, no matter men or women. In the past, women were kept within the confines of the four walls, in the name of pregnancy, prenatal care and other reasons. If that had not happened, the world would have been much more balanced and free of social evils," he opined.

Fr Swebert D'Silva, principal of St Aloysius College, in his presidential address said that the College has seen tremendous academic and social growth among the students after the introduction of lady students in the college.

Priya Shetty, organizing secretary, said that the seminar is being organized with a view to analyze the role of women in the changing society and to create awareness on gender sensitivity. "It strives to assess the opportunity available for women in all spheres and perceives the existing challenges," she informed.

Academicians, students, research scholars, NGOs and self-help groups were among those who took part in the seminar, she added. The exhibition-cum-sale of products by SHGs and NGOs helped many and was also an added attraction at the event, she said.

Some of the themes shortlisted for the seminar are 'Women in higher education - impact and challenges', 'Women as innovative entrepreneurs', 'Women and advocacy rights', 'Women and decision making', and 'Women and NGOs'.
