Mangaluru, Mar 8: Following the discovery of several Aadhaar cards abandoned on the banks of the Netravati river near Farangipete, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has launched a high-level probe into the matter.

The incident, which took place on March 3 within the Mangaluru assembly constituency, saw numerous official identification documents scattered along the riverbank. Karnataka legislative assembly speaker and local MLA U T Khader informed reporters on Saturday that the UIDAI has taken the lapse seriously.

Investigation into postal negligence

Speaker Khader stated that he had formally written to the UIDAI regarding the incident. In response, the regional office of the UIDAI in Bengaluru confirmed that it has initiated action by taking up the matter with the department of posts, which is responsible for the physical delivery of these cards.

"The department of posts has been requested to conduct a detailed investigation to ascertain how these cards reached the riverbank and to identify the officials responsible for this gross negligence," a letter from the UIDAI regional director stated. The authority noted that the recovered cards would be retrieved through the postal department as per standard procedure for further inquiry.

Redelivery for affected residents

To ensure that the intended recipients are not inconvenienced, the UIDAI has committed to reprinting all the undelivered Aadhaar letters. These will be dispatched again to the respective residents through the prescribed delivery mechanism.

The speaker emphasised that the authority remains committed to the safe handling of sensitive data and that strict action will be taken against those found guilty of dereliction of duty.
