Elderly woman killed, five injured as car plunges into roadside drain near Shiradi

Puttur, Jul 2: A 77-year-old woman was killed and five others were injured after a car plunged into a roadside drain at Gundya in Shiradi village along National Highway 75 on Wednesday.

The deceased has been identified as Vaggevi (77), a native of Udupi.

The injured have been identified as Sanjeevini, Satish, Gururaj, Varalakshmi and Kartesh. They have been admitted to a hospital in Udupi for treatment.

According to police, the family was travelling from Bengaluru to Mangaluru when an unidentified vehicle allegedly rammed into their car from behind, causing it to veer off the highway and fall into a roadside drain. The offending vehicle reportedly fled the scene.

Vaggevi sustained grievous injuries in the accident. She was initially treated at a hospital in Nelyady and was being shifted to a hospital in Udupi for advanced treatment when she succumbed to her injuries, police said.

Police from Uppinangady police station visited the accident spot, registered a case and have launched an investigation to trace the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run incident.
