Blind Ukrainians to Enjoy Soccer with Headphones

Kiev (Ukraine), Apr 4 (IANS): Visually impaired or blind football fans in Ukraine will get an opportunity to follow Euro 2012 matches at Ukrainian and Poland stadiums through headphones with live match commentary.

According to Valery Sushkevich, head of the Ukrainian National Assembly of Disabled, Ukrainian specialists are training volunteers to comment on football matches for the blind, Xinhua reported.

The Union of European Football Association (UEFA) will install special equipment with microphones and headphones at each of the eight Euro 2012 stadiums, Sushkevich said.

At least 30 disabled people can follow every match of Euro 2012 through this initiative.

"There will be special commentators prepared to provide additional information for people who can not see events on the football field. These commentators have to describe the action on the field, but not to talk about statistics or analyze what is happening in a match. Audio description would enable the blind person to get a complete picture of the game," Sushkevich said.

The 16-nation Euro 2012 soccer championships, slated for June 8-July 1, will take place in four Ukrainian cities -- Kiev, Lvov, Donetsk and Kharkov -- and four Polish cities -- Warsaw, Gdansk, Wroclaw and Poznan.
