Mangalore: Spot Death in Bike Accident - Police Attitude Angers People

Spoorthi Ullal / Brijesh Garodi
Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (BG)

Mangalore, Jun 6: A bike rider was killed on the spot when his two-wheeler collided with a tipper at Kadri here on Wednesday June 6 evening.

The deceased has been identified as Eustuse Mendonca (49), a lift mechanic and resident of Kakkebettu, Kulshekar. He was earlier in Kuwait and had settled down in Mangalore, having set up his own business. He was unmarried.

Significantly, the accident exposed the inefficiency and apathy of the police in an emergency situation.

Shockingly enough, even half an hour after the accident, the body lay at the spot. A police jeep with two policemen came about 20 minutes after the accident, but they too did not touch the body and were reportedly just lingering around, with one of them stationed near the jeep with the tipper driver in it.

The higher police officials also came to the spot, and according to eyewitnesses, they too did not do anything to move the body. Angered by their attitude, the people who had gathered by then demanded to know why the ambulance had not yet reached and why the policemen were not shifting the body.

The police replied that the ambulance was on the way, but there was no sign of it for long. Finally, frustrated with the situation, the victim's brother Arun and his friend lifted the body and started to walk away, and others too joined them.

At that moment, Kankanady traffic police (east) SI Sandesh stopped a pick-up truck and asked the driver to take the body. However, the people's anger shot up at this, and they fired the policeman for not getting police or government vehicle for the task.

Heated arguments followed between the police personnel and the public. The people demanded to know why police couldn't shift the body and why the ambulance had not reached on time.

Finally, the ambulance arrived and the body was taken away.

Speaking to Daijiworld, the driver of the tipper lorry, Mohammed, said that his tipper was transporting mud from Kankanady to Kottara. When asked about the accident, he had nothing to say, and in fact, seemed drunk.

Mohammed was later arrested by the police.

Nice concrete roads are made, but the edges are more than 6 inches deep. no way for pedestrians to walk. no place to park. no drainage for the rain water to flow. Everything in Mangalore is unplanned. This monsoon will be much more dangerous for the Mangalorians.

Same as you, I too felt very sad indeed to see these pictures. I dont understand why these people carry the body in this way ? Why these police men or other people are unable to give a fellow Indian a decent dignified respect to his body ? I totally got upset seeing these pictures, I cant believe that my close friend Arun can treat his Elder brother in this way. When a brother himself does not know how to respect his brothers body then what could be expected from others. Tomorrow it could be me or anyone else...Oh God..! Oh, Please forgive them Lord, For they don't know what they do.

Realy sad..my deepest condolences for the family and relatives..it looks to me like the injury was on the head..now iam not sure wether this person was wearing helmet or not..but studies shows that the helmets have saved lot of lives.even though its a traffic law most of us avoid the use and risk our safety.

It is time the traffic police check the drivers of the heavy duty vehicles during the afternoons and the early evenings as they finish work if they are under the influence. Checking all drivers during the night alone is not sufficient. They can check at random. The public can cooperate by informing the police if they get the slightest hint that the drivers of local buses are drunk or even other driver who notice the erratic driving of other vehicles. This way one can avoid such waste of human lives

If we notice, the 50% of the accidents/deaths are takes place due to the poor signalling and rash driving. we request higher authorities to work on this first and save lives of the peoples.

The value of human life is at its lowest in a city where real estate prices are being jacked up like nobody's business!!!The public of Mangluru have very high tolerance level. If the same situation would have arisen in Mumbai, I am pretty sure the crowd would have gone on a rampage and the driver would have gotten lynched at the hands of the public for sure, not that people here should follow the same principle!!Considering Mangalore's population the deaths due to accidents could be one of the highest in India!! I feel very upset looking at Mangalore current situation which is a getting worst day by day. Policemen, politicians are the blood suckers of poor men and public suffers. People protest for better roads and these corrupt policemen arrest them with the support of politicians and look how people are dying everyday which is not a good sign for Mangalore. People today this man tommorrow your brother, sister, father, mothers, uncle all will have the same fate as this man. If you take it easy then next will be anyones turn. protest and get the response from politicians dont spare them untill roads are done, make them true public servant and stop worshiping them includes policemen. THese kaki men are just a security guards so dont be affriad make them work for the casue of public work. let them work and sweat to get paid from tax payers.

2012 has been a bad year for many mangloreans. Too many accidents and lot of youth involved. We all know the fact that vehicles have increased quite a huge number inspite of fuel hike what so ever. But the control of traffic in mangalore has been pathetic. The worst part is most of the signal lights do not work and traffice police are least bothered. There should be a strict law and order for traffic in cities and there has to be a system which should be followed by all.

Its a shame that we are in a place where the pizza delivery van comes before an ambulance! Traffic rules are not followed and its is tragic to see people die. The people in power must ensure that proper laws are enacted and that the police are made to enforce these laws effectively and strictly. Also, apart from the guilty drivers, the owners of these tipper trucks and express buses must be put behind bars and have their license cancelled. No excuses!

The policemen did not do their job efficiently in this kind of situation. Only thing they caught the drunk driver and put him in the police van. That driver should be put behind bars for the longest time and his licence be revoked and he should never ever be seen behind the wheels on any vehicle. The police force should be more educated and trained to handle such a situation. In this case it the biker was seriously injured who would have taken him to the hospital as the ambulance was not there even after half an hour. He would have bled to his death.

Where as in Europe, not helping the injured is a criminal offense. Who wants trouble. Of course, police will saluteand give a hand shake even to the criminals or a film actor in jail, provided the criminal is rich. O poor we!

Feel very sad to hear everyday the loss of human life in Mangalore/Udupi. Roads on the highway or inside the town are always under repair and never completed. There is no check on negligent driving specially of trucks and buses. And unfortunately, during accident our police department usually grill the person who tries to hosptialise the victim, forgetting their duty to be on time. Ambulance too mostly arrive when the victim is almost dead. Regarding, Traffic Safety norms, in our NH 66, near Hotel Karavalli in Udupi, traffic signal is installed on the highway junction, which has lead to a total mess and double casualty than before.

ineffiecient state and district adminstration. The DCs of twin districts are impotent and lack manhood. Having known that NH 66 is passing through these two districts and frequencyof traffic has increased and speed too has increased due to the widneing of highways, the District adminstration has utterly failed to prtoect the general public and two wheel riders. They failed to bring in a law that mandates weaing hard hats or helmets to two wheel users. As a result many young lives and students are lost..I have been urging DCs to bring out a mandate but they are deaf and are busy in protecting the politicians or busy in collecting the haftas...I feel the DCs will wake upto the call if their own children become victim of such tragedies (God forbid)...Now its the time for citizens to mobilise popular movement and urge the adminstration to act. In high speed roads and cross or access roads, adminstration should lay speed barriers like the speed barriers in Gulf countries..so that speed is reduced and crossing doesnt become a risky affair.. ONly speed breakers and helmets can save some young lives....Yes in coastal karnataka cows are valued more than human beings. Sad but true.

I stay at a Kadri flat. I was taking a leisurely walk to collect my evening quota. At Mallikatta circle,a bus going to Karkala turned the circle and suddenly applied brakes.A Lady driver in an ALTO car (with a L sticker) crashed against it and hit a pile of rubble. Luckily, she seems to have escaped with minor injuries, but the car is totally damaged.
All this happened right in front of my eyes.
