Sensex Rises 47 Points; Capital Goods, Power Stocks Up


Mumbai, Jun 20 (IANS): A benchmark index of Indian equities markets was trading 47 points higher around noon Wednesday, led by good buying support in capital goods, power and health care stocks.

The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 16,903.96 points, was at 16,907.36 points in the afternoon session, up 0.28 percent or 47.56 points from its previous close at 16,859.80.

Sensex midcap was up 35.23 points and smallcap was up 41.91 points.

The BSE capital goods index was up 117.68 points, the power index was up 20.99 points, and health care index was up 72.08 points.

The wider 50-scrip S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) was trading 0.30 percent higher at 5,119.25 points.

Major Sensex gainers were Tata Motors, up 3.02 percent at Rs.245.50; Dr Reddys, up 2.93 percent at Rs.1,589.05; Jindal Steel, up 2.27 percent at Rs.437.50; Hero MotoCorp, up 1.93 percent at Rs.2,046; and BHEL, up 1.87 percent at Rs.215.50.

Major Sensex losers were Coal India, down 1.86 percent at Rs.337.56; Bharti Airtel, down 1.32 percent at Rs.310.60; HDFC Bank, down 1.04 percent at Rs.531.50; Hindaco Inds, down 1.02 percent at Rs.121.45; and ITC, down 0.88 percent at Rs.246.90.
