Rio de Janeiro, Jul 13 (IANS): Former Portugal's midfielder Deco has signed a contract extension with Fluminense that ties him to the Brazilian club until the end of 2013.
The new deal will also give the 34-year-old, whose previous contract was set to expire in December, the option of a further season should he decide to continue in 2014.
"Fluminense opened its doors for me and my connection with the club has become stronger by the day," Deco said during a press conference Thursday. "Things have gone well and I'm feeling happy. I also sense that people here feel the same way too."
The Brazilian-born playmaker joined Fluminense in 2010 after a glittering European career with Chelsea, Barcelona and Porto.
He said retirement was still far from his thoughts having enjoyed his role as a mentor to his younger teammates.
"The affection and passion I have for this club is a source of pride for me," Deco said. "We will continue to talk about the future but my focus right now is on playing football."
