Buenos Aires, Jul 17 (IANS): Argentinean tennis star Juan Martin Del Potro says bringing home a medal from the London Olympics would be as good as winning a Grand Slam tournament.
In an interview with local daily Clarin Monday, the World No. 9 said: "Undoubtedly, to win a medal would be a great achievement, a marvellous, beautiful and historic achievement ... considering the quality of my rivals. It would be almost like winning a Grand Slam," reports Xinhua.
Del Potro said he hoped to enjoy the summer games as "a unique experience," because "it's something that happens (only) every four years."
"It would be fantastic to win a medal at the upcoming Games," said Del Potro, but added "it will be very difficult because there are only three podium spots."
"Those high in the ranking are the favourites, the ones with the most chances to win. My goal is to grab a medal from them," he said.
Besides the singles event, Del Potro will compete mixed doubles with compatriot Gisela Dulko.
The 23-year-old tennis player, born in Tandil in the east central province of Buenos Aires, has won 11 tournaments in his career.
