Bangalore: Krishna Urges PM to Stop Further Release of Water to TN

Bangalore, Oct 6 (PTI): Highlighting the "grim" situation in Cauvery basin, External Affairs Minister S M Krishna today appealed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to stop further release of water to Tamil Nadu and to seek a report from the team that has been deputed to assess the water situation.

"I would kindly urge upon you to explore possibilities of stopping further release of water from dams in Karnataka and also call for an interim report of the team of experts", Krishna, now on an official visit to the U.S., said in a letter to Singh, a copy of which was released here.

Krishna, who hails from Cauvery basin district of Mandya, the epicentre of the stir, said the situation was grim in Cauvery irrigation areas and also in Bangalore following depleted water level in dams after release of water, as per the September 19 directive of the Cauvery River Authority, headed by Singh, and upheld by the Supreme Court recently.

"I sincerely feel that the situation needs your immediate attention, if it is to be prevented from worsening, as there is already a strong feeling among people of Karnataka that they may have to face severe shortage of water in the months to come", Krishna said.

"The entire state is waiting with bated breath to get immediate relief as otherwise it will spell disaster for the population in the cauvery basin", he said.

Krishna also pointed out that the monsoon was over in Karnataka while the North-east monsoon would commence in Tamil Nadu and has the prospect of adequate rains.

Ruling BJP leaders including former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa have been criticising four union ministers representing Karnataka, particularly Krishna, for their "failure" to convince the Prime Minister about the water-situation.

The Karnataka government began releasing 9000 cusecs after the Supreme Court asked it to abide by the CRA directive, till October 15.

all the central ministers from karnataka are of no use. Even the MP's. they do not know how to get the work done. it took very long time to get the balgalore train to mangalore. and this muniyappa stopped visiting Mangalore-Udup[i when he was Highways minister and our highway were pathetic. once the work is done, every political party takes advantage. If moily had to favor karnataka , he wud have done it when he was Law Minister. Everything is get political these days.

Every decision in India today is political. We in Karnataka have the habit of giving wrong mandate. Vote BJP to Vidan Sabha and Congress to Lok Sabha, and vice versa. It was Krishna then and today it is Shettar implementing court orders at the behest of national leadership very keen on getting to power at the center. If the same government was in power both at state and center, it would have been different. Even better, vote only to the regional parties and ask national parties not even to bother just like TN does.
The courts with all respects I understand are upholding the unity of India by ordering release of water to TN who might also be facing water shortage. However, I have not seen even one order from court asking TN to take adequate steps to store excess water when the rainfall is good and penalize TN if steps are not taken within a reasonable time frame. Instead, the courts are intervening when there is water shortage in general. This is true short shortsightedness on the part of the court which is not expected to take sides.

    Mr. Dinesh Poojary,
Kundapur/Bangalore: I agree with you 100%. I can feel the pains of our people in the Cauvey Basin Area. I along with my family lived in Mysore for 13 years and drank the water supplied from the Cauvery River, Krishna Raja Sagar Dam (KRS). My heart goes with the agitating people and give my moral support to them in the hour of need. Jai Hind, Jai Karnataka.

Krsihna should have done this job much earlier.

Silent PM has asked to release water and then sent central team to state for inspection. He should have first sent central team for inspection and then should have taken decision whether to release water or not. This clear gives political conspiracy against karnataka.
    Jai Karnataka....
