Almost 70 pc workers waste time at work : Study

Melbourne, Mar 25 PTI :More than two thirds of workers say they waste time every day while at work, mostly surfing news websites, a new study has found. 34 per cent said they wasted 30 minutes or less each day, 24 per cent said they wasted between 30 minutes and an hour, and 11 per cent said they wasted time for several hours.

As many as 21 per cent said they only slacked off one or two times per week, and 10 per cent said they never wasted any time at all, News.com.au reported.

Most people (37 per cent) said their most frequent time-wasting websites were news sites. The survey was conducted by a US jobs website on more than 1000 workers to find out what people do at work when they’re not actually working.

20 per cent said they never visited non-work related websites in the office, 14 per cent said they most often checked social media sites, and 12 per cent said on-line shopping sites were their biggest weakness. Almost one-third of respondents said their boss addressed the issue by blocking access to some personal sites at work. However, more than half (52 per cent) obviously aren’t fazed, and are happy to get around any bans by using their smartphone or tablet.

The more educated people were the more likely were they to waste time, with 76 per cent with doctorate degrees admitting to time-wasting every day, compared with 59 per cent of people with a high school diploma or less.Divorced people are also likely to be more diligent employees, with just 51 per cent wasting time daily compared with 75 per cent of singles and 75 per cent of people in relationships, survey by website salary.com found.

The survey found that Tuesday between 9am and 11am is the most productive time while between 3pm and 5pm on a Friday, a person is least productive, the report said.
Most wasteful day is topped by Friday at 43 per cent, followed by Monday (16 per cent), Wednesday (9 per cent), Thursday (6 per cent) and Tuesday (3 per cent).

The biggest distraction in the workplace include: Too many meetings (19 per cent), inefficient team members (17 per cent), coworkers (17 per cent), office politics (13 per cent), busy work (13 per cent), other (11 per cent), and ‘my boss’ (8 per cent).

Honestly, I click on Daiji world thrice in a day, Times of India & Udayavani once in a day but if Indian cricket series going on, then every now and then through my laptop to know the score since it has WiFi system because in our net work internet service banned cricket.org site in Official server. Of course we do surf on these web sites but it doesn’t mean that we are wasting time since we have set date for monthly report for each month and we know how & when to finish the target. People like me might be spending one or two hours more in the Office but its’ became our life style since we can’t avoid surfing Daiji, TOI or Udayavani, etc.

In my opinion, as long as one does not waste more than 25% of their working hours doing other things, I feel, by and large, it should be acceptable, as the old saying goes, "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" - as some relaxation from the continuous work and drudgery is required - it depends, of course, on the nature of work one does and it is subject to variation.

My personal experience for the past 40 years or so, has been that, in my latest job of working in a Warehouse and Logistic Operations, here in Australia, which was so to say, a line function, and a busy work place for that matter, where it involved receiving and dispatch of a number of consignments and orders a day, respectively, it was an exercise of full time non-stop working, and there was no time to waste the entire day, except of course, the allowed half-hour lunch break.

However, in the Staff function of Marketing Services, where I worked previously in India, it was the question of completion of my certain tasks within a stipulated period, and there were plenty of opportunities for doing other things and flexibility in that job. So, it all depends upon and comes to the individual`s particular work situation.

Having said all the above, it is nothing wrong if someone pursues their interests doing other things while at work, provided they act responsibly, having completed their jobs and tasks in the required manner and time limit set out by the Management.

My observation here in Australia is that, by and large, the employees involved in line functions like Tellers in Bank, check-out operators in the Super Markets, and the like, so also the Production Workers on the factory shop floor, have no scope or opportunities for whiling away their time while on work since they are a sort of continuous process functions, and they did not waste any time, whereas, the people involved in the staff functions and professionals planned their own work and time schedules, deadlines of course, it mattered.

    THIS IS THE TRUTH.
CAN YOU PREVENT A BABY FROM PUTTING FINGER IN MOUTH.
ANYBODY WILL DO ONLY THAT WHICH HE OR SHE LIKES.
WORK IS A COMPULSION FOR WHICH YOU GET PAID.
BUT GOOD COMPANIES OVERLOOK THE 70% AND VALUE ONLY 30%.

In many companies Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, orkut, gmail, yahoo, picasa etc etc are banned because of this. But now employees open these sites at touch screen mobile phones. Some people can skip dinner, but not FB.

Indian Government Workers are most unproductive & Earn Pay without attending work, how?- they just sign the attendance after they return from their tours & travels as their Bosses weakness is exploited by the employees for their advantage.
When surprise visit to Government Hospitals were given by ministers, they found more than 65% of the doctors do private practice without attending their duties.
This is one of the factors- why our work never gets done without greasing their palms as well.
