Mangalore, Jan 12: Professor Venkat Rao Memorial Annual CME and state level quiz was inaugurated at Father Muller Medical College (FMMC) on Saturday January 11.

This programme is organized annually in memory of the restless visionary who served the institution in its early stages.

The event was inaugurated by lighting of the auspicious lamp by the dignitaries present on the dais.

The chief guest of the function was Dr S Ramanand Shetty, Honourable Vice Chancellor, Nitte University, and former Vice Chancellor, RGUHS, Bangalore.

Padmabhushan Dr Devi Prasad Shetty, chairman, Narayana Group of Hospitals, Bangalore, was the guest of honour and the speaker for the day. Fr Patrick Rodrigues, administrator, FMCI, presided over the occasion. Dr Jayaprakash Alva, dean and Prof Dr Eren, HOD of surgery, were also present on the dais.

Addressing the participants, Dr Ramanand Shetty said, “CME is now making a lot of noise. It was concerned only with colleges and that particular area but now it has expanded beyond this. CME has taken a major place and is dominated by private participation. The idea behind CME is to enhance our skills and competency since we are in an era of change. According to MCI, medical professionals are dynamic in nature and there is no end to learning for doctors.”

In his presidential address, Fr Rodrigues said, “Medicine is a technology driven profession and technology is dominating. So people behind this have to be very knowledgeable and adhere to technology. Use technology judiciously. These sorts of CMEs are indeed necessary to improve the overall skills of the students and doctors.”

Padmabhushan Dr Devi Prasad Shetty and Dr G G Laxman Prabhu, HOD of Urology, KMC, were the speakers for the day. The quiz was conducted by Dr Sameer, assistant professor, department of general surgery.

I have very pleasant and nostalgic memories of Prof. Venkat Rao, who is rightly termed as the legend by Father Patrick Rodrigues. He was a man for all seasons and he was one even though a qualified Surgeon with a FRCS, he believed in giving the nature a chance to play its role. I got to know him during the tenure of Father Peter Noronha as the Director of FMCI when I was on the Governing Baord

He was a friend and a doctor not only to me, but my entire family. It was he who did the difficult surgery on my tongue thirty-three years ago and healed me completely. He used to come to my house and we all used to enjoy his company and very informative talk. I also recall attending a party at his residence in Ullal at which many of the Father Muller's officers used to be present.

I compliment The management of Father Muller's in organizing a quiz to commemorate Dr. Rao's memory. I would say that Dr. venkat Rao is not dead, but lives in the hearts of all those who loved him and I am no exception.
