Mangalore: International Psychopharminar held at Father Muller Medical College

Mangalore, Jan 14: The Department of Psychiatric Nursing, Father Muller College of Nursing and Department of Pharmacology, Father Muller Medical College organized one day International Seminar on Psychopharminar-Update-2014 in collaboration with UNESCO Chair Bioethics South India Unit, K S Hegde Medical Academy, Nitte University and WPA section on Psychiatry in Developing Countries at the Decennial Memorial Hall on January 12.

170 delegates consisting of psychiatrists, pharmacologists, psychiatric nurses, psychologists and psychiatric social workers from various institutions in and out of Mangalore attended the seminar.

The programme commenced with the first session at 9 am by Dr E Mohandas on Anti-convulsants in Psychiatry- Current evidence, followed by three sessions i. e. Psychotropic drugs in elderly – Basics by Dr Anand Ramakrishnan, Antidepressants in 21st century  by Dr Rajesh Nagpal and Drug interactions in Psychiatry by Dr Princy Louis Palatty. The above sessions were chaired by Dr Satheesh Rao, Dr Denzil Pinto, Dr Ravish Thunga, and Dr M K Vijayalaxmi.

The inauguration ceremony commenced with a prayer song at 12:10 pm. Binsha Papachan, asst prof welcomed the gathering. The chief guest Shri. N. Vinaya Hegde, Chancellor, Nitte University, Mangalore lighted the lamp as a symbol of lighting wisdom followed by the address by the Chief Guest and the presidential address by Rev. Fr Patrick Rodrigues. Prof. Agnes E J delivered vote of thanks and the inauguration ceremony was concluded by the Institutional Anthem at 1:00 pm.

The afternoon sessions were Nursing perspectives in Psychopharmacotherapy by  professor Chanu Battacharya and Prof. Agnes E J, Long acting injectable antipsychotics in the treatment of schizophrenia by Dr Russel D'souza, Are older antipsychotics and antidepressants obsolete? by Dr Naveen Chandra and Ethical and legal implication of globalization of clinical trials  by Dr Russel D'souza. The above four sessions were chaired by Dr Ravish Thunga, Dr. Sateesh Rao and Prof Irene Veigas respectively. These sessions were followed by a very fruitful discussion between the resource persons and the delegates.

The one day international seminar 'Psychopharminar-Update-2014', which was highly informative and knowledgeable came to an end with the valedictory function at 3:45 pm by the feedback from the delegates, the distribution of the mementos and certificates to the resource persons, chairs and presenting certificates to the delegates.
