M’lore: Doctors perform rare spine surgery at FMMCH

Media Release

Mangalore, Jan 17: A 35 year old lady who allegedly tried to kill herself by hanging was miraculously saved by Dr Mrinal Shetty, Unit Chief of Spine Surgery, Father Muller Medical College Hospital and his esteemed team of doctors.

Her attempt to suicide led to a major fracture dislocation in the neck (atlantoaxial dislocation) which left her paralyzed in the  upper and lower limbs.

The eminent team of doctors of Father Muller Medical College Hospital headed by Dr Mrinal Shetty performed two surgeries, one on the spine (Occipitocervical furian) which took 4.5 hours and the other  through the mouth (transoral decompression) which took  2 hours.

The patient was also taken to the rehabilitation centre. Now it is almost a month after the surgery and she is recuperating both medically as well as mentally. It was a test of all the skill and knowledge the doctors had accumulated over the years and has set to be a rare feat in the medical field.

Dr Mrinal Shetty also has one more rare surgery performed to his credit.  A 46 year old man fractured his lower back by falling from the second floor of the building. In order to reconstruct the lower back two surgeries were conducted, one on his back to align the spinal column and the other on the abdomen to reconstruct the fractured bone.  Since the patient was brought one month after the accident it caused many other complications during the surgery.  Dr Mrinal Shetty and his team undertook the surgery which changed the entire scene and was a life changing experience for the team.

These surgeries were the most successful surgical ventures in this part. This have brought accolades to the hospital. These kinds of rare operation in the hospital are conducted by eminent surgeons when such mishap takes place. Father Muller Medical College Hospital provides specialized treatment with latest technology to meet the needs of the patient.
