Mangalore, Feb 20: “Kankanady market is the second largest in Mangalore city. But if one visits this market now, one can see only chaos. Memorandums have been submitted to various people’s representatives and officials, but in vain,” said Ali Hasan, president, Kankanady Market Traders’ Union, Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (auto rickshaw unit), Kankanady Market Auto and Taxi Park, addressing media persons at Hotel Woodlands on Wednesday February 19.

“The various issues of this market have been brought to the notice of the DC, MLA, ministers, MCC commissioner, local corporator, and other officials; but no proper steps have been taken to solve the issue. MLA J R Lobo has directed the MCC commissioner in the presence of the DC, to remove the advertisement board inside the bus stand as it is blocking the visibility of the market, but no proper action has been taken against this,” he added.

“The roof has been leaking in rainy season and it needs immediate repairs as it has been difficult to carry out trade inside. The MLA has promised to put in interlocks opposite the toilet areas in the market premises, but no action has been taken. The entry gates of the market have been spoiled due to rust, resulting in the entry of stray dogs and unauthorized people at night. The stray dogs in the surrounding areas have been creating problems for women, children, and senior citizens. There are too many street vendors between Kankanady market and Jeppu Market, and this has to be stopped immediately. If they obtain proper permits or license from the MCC and carry out their business, we have no issue in this regard,” said Hasan.

Hasan warned that if all these issues are not resolved within 15 days, a massive protest will be held in the near future.

Secretary Roshan Patrao, Vasanth Tailor, Prema, Dheeraj, Sattar, Ashraf, Arun Kumar, Afthab Koya, Lingappa, and Sunil were present.
