Kuwait: Two guards from Kerala shot dead in armed robbery

Kuwait, Apr 27 (Kuwait Times):
A three-member gang of armed robbers shot dead two guards hailing from Kerala before escaping with KD 13,000 in cash Friday night near the Sulaibiya vegetable market. Later yesterday, police claimed they had identified the perpetrators and expected to arrest them “within hours”.

Sharangdharan, 55, who hailed from the Kozhikode district of Kerala, was shot in the chest and died on the spot, while Muhammad Rashid Jamalullali Thangal, 25, from the Malappuram district of Kerala, was shot in the head and succumbed to his injuries at Farwaniya Hospital. Both were working as security personnel with a leading private security company in Kuwait.

According to sources, the guards – tasked with depositing the day’s collection of a supermarket at the bank via ATM – were attacked by the assailants as they walked towards their security van with the cash chest. The gunmen, reportedly in black attire, fired at them at close range and escaped with the chest containing KD 13,000, leaving the victims in pools of blood. The crime took place around 10.30 pm on Friday.

The suspects did not attempt to break into the armored van that reportedly contained as much as KD 200,000 in cash, according to reports from the scene. The driver was in the van during the incident, but was unharmed. Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects fired 36 rounds from an AK-47 during the attack. A heavy security presence was reported at the scene following the crime. Sources also said that a car that was found ablaze on the Sixth Ring Road near Sulaibiya was discovered to be stolen and may have been the getaway car used by the assailants.

Meanwhile, Indian Ambassador Sunil Jain told Kuwait Times that the embassy is in touch with the Interior Ministry over the shocking incident. “We will do all what is required in coordination with the Kuwaiti authorities,” he said. Incidents of armed robberies and assaults have often been reported in Kuwait, although criminal acts involving armed gangs gunning down their victims for money are rare in the country.

Very sad because of Money These People didnt have mercy on normal poor workers life.It Looks bit suspicious that they didnt harm the Driver .was it a complott? If they wanted really Money would have shot dead everyone who came across and fled from spot with the van and Money. Was it a grudge? or personal Problem?soon we will know better.Heartfelt sympathy to the Family.Usually such guards are given and should be provided with safty jacket .it is their bad luck they didnt have one.May their souls rest in peace.

@Rita. This is a certain case of Robbery and nothing else. The van in this issue is not a ordinary one but one called Securicor and is a money/cash carrier. It is fully bullet/fire proof. It has an integrated locking system only the driver has access to. The movement of this vehicle is monitored by the company 24 hours thru its built in cameras. These two employees who were shot were outside the vehicle when shot at. There is absolutely no way of stealing the money that was inside unless the driver seated inside has a hand in it. Two innocent souls lost their lives and may they rest in peace. Amen

I feel for the family of the young security men who lost their lives needlessly. It should be a reminder to all. If you are confronted by armed/violent robbers/criminals, give them what they want. Your life is worth more than any material things! Condolences to the family and wish the Kuwaiti police will catch the culprits soon and bring them to justice. RIP.

Very sad to note about the untimely deaths of these two brave security guards. They got killed in line of duty inflicting an irreparable loss for their families. The perpetrators of this crime should be brought to book immediately and given the death punishment.

It's both sad & shocking to see Indians being treated to such inhuman atrocities & being killed. Though the motive was theft & robbery, the larger picture is that being Indians, the gaurds may not have been sufficiently armed to protect themselves against these attackers whom I'm sure are Pakistanis or Bangladeshies or FAR EAST thugs. The sad fact is that we Indians resort to such jobs without proper securities in far away lands, far from our families for want of money & food security & to sustain lifestyle in our country. If India could generate jobs for all of us, there was no reason that such a huge population of our countrymen are outside, particularly in the GCC countries doing odd jobs such as drivers , security men & attenders. I do not mean to de-grade these jobs, but then the living conditions & their security levels are dismal. Need to understand what our Govt authorities like the exclusive NRI Minister(Who is also from Kerala) would do to avoid such instances from occuring? What is the Indian embassy doing to protect our men? Both of them are similar to our armed forces men - They should be treated like one. This incident needs to be probed & the perpetuaters punished for the gruesome killings. Last year Italian armed soldiers killed two of our fishermen in Indian waters & the UPA Govt let them off without any case. Hope we fight back on this issue, though the incident has happened on foreign soil. My blood boils when I read or see such news about our countrymen. Today both Sharangdharan & Muhammad Rashid Jamalullali are lost forever to their families & loved ones. Their dreams of leading a good life in India shattered. Who is responsible? My request to all NRI's on this forum - Please give these incidents a good though & fight for justice with the Indian embassy & ministries. We cannot let go of this as an accident. Pray to god to both these brave men to rest in peace.

    Mr. J. Anata,
It will be appreciated if you take up this matter with a reliable MP or political leader, although they may be busy these days. As far as I know our embassy will not act until there is pressure from the country.
