Mangalore: CM urged central government to set up Niddodi power project

Yashodhar Bangera
Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Apr 29: At a time when every political leader of some relevance in the region is crying hoarse that he or she would not allow Niddodi thermal power project near here to come up because of its disastrous impact on ecology, environment and quality of life alike, it has now been revealed that Karnataka chief minister(CM), Siddaramaiah, had written a letter on June 24 last, urging union minister for state for power, Jyotiraditya Scindia, to execute this project at the earliest.

In the letter, copy of which was procured through Right to Information Act, Siddaramaiah had urged the government to do everything for building and commissioning this ultra mega power project because of increasing demand for electricity in Karnataka, and non-existence of any central government power projects in the state.

The letter pledges all necessary support from the government, and asks the minister to direct the Central Electricity Authority to take needy steps on the issue, and to take further follow up action as may be necessary.

In his reply dated August 8, 2013, Scindia said that the officials of the Central Electricity Authority had visited Niddodi for the purpose, and that the authority had told him that a report had been submitted in this connection on June 19. He said that issues raised during the visit of Niddodi on May 17 had been discussed in a meeting held in the presence of chief secretary (energy) and other representatives of Karnataka government. He had asked the CM to direct the concerned officials to take further steps as may be necessary for early execution of the project.

It has come to light that officials of Power Corporation of Karnataka Ltd had considered Niddodi, Mudipu,  and Paladka before finalizing Niddodi for the project. The project will require 285 acres of private land and 160 acres of government land in Niddodi, 343 acres of private land and 123 acres of government land in Tenka Mijar, and 406 acres of private land and 405 acres of government land in Badaga Mijar village.

Local MLA, Abhaychandra Jain, who had been in the opposition when there was a hue and cry over the proposed project four months before the new government in which he is a minister was sworn in, had announced his determination not to allow the power project to come up at Niddodi. In addition to Jain, MP, Nalin Kumar Kateel, Congress candidate for Lok Sabha, Janardhan Poojary, and others had spelt out their strong stand on these lines. It would be interesting to see whether these leaders would be able to stick to their promises and block this project from coming up at Niddodi.

I am not agreeing with the point by readerwriter007, pune. There are many dry lands are available in the state, however, why they unscientifically chose an agricultural land at Niddodi? What's the reason behind this mystery? any other reason like either this land is very near to Mangalore International Airport or accessible to Mangalore Port or near by the way of MRPL or the influence of notorious BHOO-MAFIA? once these bloody politicians for the sake of election they oppose and in the meantime they passes resolution at the parliament without considering public awareness. As nobody is seen straight forward in this issues, which really leads to a lot of confusion as well as riot. No politician goes in accordance with the public interest or opinion. They come, rule & swallow money, land , wealth & then themselves oppose others rule in negative manner. More than enough... we elect them as per democracy, but they rule like bureaucracy. Jaago Indians jaagoooooooooooore!

The proposed Niddodi Power Project is a step in the right direction considering the current power crises in the state. Lot of hue & cry is being made and said project is being opposed with ulterior motives and vested interest. One has to be practical and act in the interest of all as there is no gain without pain. Proper Infrastructure along with uninterrupted power supply is the need of the hour for over all development of any region.

Realistic study of rehabilitation and resettlement of Project
Affected Persons (PAP‘s ) alongwith environmental issues need to be properly addressed and implemented.

I belong to the place which is nearby to Niddodi and I have grown up seeing the same undeveloped state of the area since decades. I sincerely wish to see the places in and around Niddodi to be developed. Needless to say, the project will generate employment and business opportunities for our children in the near future. We had to leave our native place and come miles away for a square meal. Hope the good sense will prevail upon those who have been opposing the project to come up.

we want power but we dont want the power project to come.....
we want jobs for youth, but we dont want manufacturing companies to come up.

when Narendra Modi invites companies to set up it is development.
when our Siddaramayya writes letter to start a power project, it is environmental pollution.

wake up people wake up don't trash any project which is actually needed for the development of our country.
to get something we have to loose something.

we have land for project, we have coal for project, we have the manpower for the project, but we dont allow project to come up.

better start project on moooooon and supply power to our state.

Unfortunate to see your comment. you are ready to screw your own land man. Electricity plants can not be in the heart of such agricultural land yaar. they need to identify lands which are dry and away from city so that there will not be any health specific issues. Just browse the impact of such power projects in other places of the country. Whole generation gets wiped off due to such projects. LEt them take it to some deserted lands of the south Karnataka. Definitely not here , in our granary land. come on ... study and then respond back. it's purely because of the money they are behind the project. if the project is called off , a whole bunch of money may pull back from all these ministers, that's why they are so determined to bring it. that's ther only reason for our 4 ministers, keeping themselves silent. devre kapadbekappa namm ooranna....

    1) You should first try to understand what is a thermal power plant.
2)Nobody is objecting the project. Everybody is saying that it has to be built at a barren land which is not suitable for cultivation.
3)Fly ashes and heat generated by this plant will destroy the nature and there may not be sufficient rain for our future generation.
4)One power plant is already in Padubidri and within a distance of 60kms another plant???
I think it is time for DK people to wake up!!!
    5) I think you are from Niddodi, and they have given a good offer for your land!!!!

Good point. It does not make sense to have another coal powered plant within a short distance from the existing power plant near Udupi. Gas based power plant is much cleaner compared to coal. Ideally, a Gas based power plant need to come near a new harbour in UK district.

I feel sad by the decision of our CM. He is cheating people. Why should people of coastal region suffer ? Always why its only we people ?Is it because people of D.K wont oppose these things ? .. We already have one power plant near udupi which is already causing huge damage to the surrounding .. and again why one more ? These politicians are completely damaging our coastal region. Instead why dont they think about providing few acres of land to other industries like automobiles,Software companies, etc. which could generate lot of jobs for people of D.K so that our youngsters need not go to other place for job. These politicians are really not bothered about betterment of people of D.K ...

OF course it's time to our congi leaders to answer this. they were acting as of they are all ( along with their govt ) is with people to stop this project. but back to back they were enforcing central to take this project ahead. What a shame. Just praying they loose the power this time.

AAP is a party of talkers and not doers.
They are good at highlighting the problems not giving a solution to the problems. In governance they can be effective opposition only. Their method of governance will take our country to at least 50 years back.
They are like commentators in cricket match who analyze and tell that this ball should have been played in this way and player wouldn't have become out. Analyzing is very easy, but the player only knows how difficult the ball was when he had to take the decision within the fraction of second to hit it or leave it!!!

These kind of projects has to be built on barren lands. This project will have greater impact on nature .Already temperature is increasing in the coastal areas and it will further increase the temperature and destroy the nature.
Disadvantages of thrmal powe plants are
    1).pollution of the atmosphere.
    2).huge requirement of water.
3).Handling of coal and disposal of ash is quite difficult.
4).Efficiency of thermal plant is less (30-35%).
