Mangalore: Cases against 18 buses for not installing emergency doors

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (SHS)

Mangalore, May 2: The transport department on Thursday May 1 conducted raids and inspected buses plying in the district and booked as many as 18 cases against both private and KSRTC buses for not installing emergency exit doors.

Following successive accidents involving Volvo buses, the state transport department decided to make it mandatory for all long-route buses including tourist buses to fit emergency doors. These doors, which are in addition to emergency exits, are being provided in the middle for conventional Volvo buses and at the rear for multi-axle Volvo buses.

The officials on May 1 inspected government and private buses and booked cases against three KSRTC buses and 15 private transporters.

Earlier the state transport department had twice extended the deadline for the installation of exit doors. A study of the previous year’s accidents had revealed that emergency doors would have brought down the mortality rate. While the transport department initially fixed February 20 as last date for fixing of emergency doors, and extended it to April 30 in view of time needed for this exercise.

The officials said that the raid operations would continue for the next few days. Legal action would be initiated after taking the buses into custody if the owners failed to implement the orders.

In fact, we need to have a rapid revolution in the surface transport sector, but no one is interested. All are biting the same piece of bone like dogs. We discuss only problems not looking at amicable solutions.

I am glad that the police have moved fast and booked 18 bus owners for not installing the mandatory emergency doors.

Hope the owners of the buses will undertake the necessary jobs.

Just an eye wash. In all the bus burning cases, Volvo was let go off without any offense booked against. The Transport authorities of Ktk & AP had taken huge monies from Volvo allegedly.

Why cant the transport dept book cases against buses which blow air horn repeatedly into our ears???

Anyways, I have no hopes on this govt or the department. I had huge expectations when they came to power. They are only as good as our previous govt. Sad but true!

@Ananth Prabhu,Mangalore,Blowing horn is really makes ones ear blow. All over India it is there.only by this bus cant be prohibited, but all over it should be as in Eu.Only by emergency should be done otherwise a heavy punishment be paid.whereas in India there is no rules and regulations are followed from most of Drivers ,and many times buses. They see only their Profit. The Controller should in the first instance control instead of emergency doors ,first breaks and machanical side too much load etc. Many times breaks fail ,too many People no Speed control.Horrible.

I totally agree , this is the biggest problem . i always pick up a fight with bus drivers and the whole day is spoilt because of this . Unlike emergency doors , keeping the proper safety hammer is the best option as u cab break open all the glasses and escape in case of emergency .

Cancel the license of these Bus operators. Monopoly of few private bus operators is causing immense hardship to commuters.private bus operators are throwing all rules to winds and exploiting commuters by charging exorbitant fair during holiday and peak seasons. Since transportation is a basic necessity, govt should nationalize the transport industry and give good services to commuters at reasonable rates.

A very good job done by Transport officials. Private & KSRTC VOLVO buses must be commissioned to run due to some kickbacks after ignoring emergency exit details, this incident has reminded me of tragedy in Upahaar cinema where many died while watching movie due to the emergency exit issue.

Why not check the Trucks that don't have proper lights both in the front n back ,no number plates...why not Two wheelers whose Rear view mirror are removed and more often than not they are the ones who drive rashly....Why not the local buses who blare horns.....,All it requires is checking up around 20 vehicles every day...all will automatically toe the line.....Lets make Manglore a "FINE" city....Let the rule of Law be Seen....
