Mangalore, Jul 7: Fire broke out on the first floor of a commercial building at Balmatta here on Monday July 8 night.

The fire sparked off in what is said to be a wholesale dental supplies godown located on the first floor of Laxmi Krishna building.

Massive flames engulfed the godown, completely reducing the items stored inside to ashes.

Two fire tenders rushed to the spot and after much efforts, managed to douse the fire.

However, even the fire was put out, thick smoke continued to billow out and formed dense rings, making entry into the godown difficult.

The cause of the fire is not yet known, and it is suspected that it was either short circuit or due to some spark that came into contact with a chemical.

The owner of the wholesale business is yet to be ascertained, as the place carries no board.

Kadri police arrived at the spot.

The DC and MCC / MUDA Commissioner's should inspect this building and check its legality. There could be a few more fatal accidents in the future. Please act and take corrective measures before its too late.

Look at some donkeys who are discussing the issue or watching the fire by standing inside the building instead of evacuating, which is dangerous for themselves and even it is also difficult for the the fire extinguishing team to do their job, some of them are students i believe behaving like donkeys...is it a movie going on there to stand and watch inside the building which caught fire ?

I was reading comments from Dexter, Abu Dhabi. That's India. We are different. In many things. In safety, discipline, law and order, driving , sexual harassment. safety, we don't care. Entrepreneurs don't care about any safety of the employees nor the building ( except some high profile corporates do take care now days ). We don't maintain any discipline , anywhere... in public place, in queue maintaining, helping others... nowhere. Law and order, we are searching for. It's completely vanished. Here and there you see some arrests, but punishments no. nothing we hear on punishments for any kind of crimes. driving, we drive hevoc. no road discipline, driving sense, rules obey... nothing, anybody can come and go anywhere, wrong side drive is ok, two wheeler with out helmet is ok, vehicles with number plates with out proper defined formats , ok. horning, overtaking , reckless driving ..accepted. Sexual harassment, we are increasing day by day with exponential speed. now the count is on daily basis. earlier statistics was given per year or per month basis. now more numbers recorded , but per day basis. So many rapes, so many sexual harassment cases... but nobody is punished on fast track and with right punishment. If there is punishment heard also, it's 3 to 4 years jail with some 10 K penalty and immediately release on bail...

So we are different in many things we do here in India. Please don't compare us with Abu Dhabi or Dubai where we have seen so strict rules and also law and order in place.

Here in UAE whenever there is a fire, the fire service and the police cordon off the whole area and do not let anyone come close to the building for the fear of any accidents happening and people getting hurt. One day during a fire, I saw a guy recording the rescue on his mobile camera. A cop directly approached him and confiscated his camera and made him sit in the Police car for sometime.
Now, lets take the case of Mangalore, firemen are trying to fight fire and what are people doing, standing in between and recording the operation and hampering rescue efforts. People instead of helping the firemen by staying away from the building, want to get into the building and record everything, only to boast about it on the social media sites.

When will we ever learn our responsibilities and let the professionals do their work.

You are absolutely right. the problem is we never inherited safety culture. safety standards are very poor in india as well the safety knowledge of the people. its all from base education. if its attacking pub, moral policing their lot to do that in mangalore. we ourselves say that dakshina kanna is a buddivantara naadu and for me its a joke.

Apartment associations do not exist if exists only name sake. Builders do not form associations as per karnataka apartment act. Very often very poor electricity connections allowed due to corruption.

Very sad things happening now a days in Mangalore. Fire service personnel done a good job no doubt. Short circuit may be the cause of fire.
