Mangalore, Jul 13: Though people of DK and Udupi rejoiced over the widespread rain that picked up two days ago after a long spell of heat, a few parts across these districts have had to face much ordeal with incessant rains causing damages to property.

Following heavy rains in the district, Kumaradhara bridge at Subrahmanya was inundated on Saturday July 12 night. The swelling river, a usual sight in rainy season has submerged the bridge even this time.

It is reported that due to strong winds along the coast, three houses have been damaged at Meenakali near Baikampady. The strong winds that hit near the sea shore at around 6.15 pm caused severe damages. The houses of Dayananda Poojary, Divakara Suvarna and Antony witnessed bore the brunt of the raging storm. The roof tiles and cement roof tops were disintegrated due to the strong winds resulting in the damage to household items.

The sea erosion is at Baikampady is adding to the troubles. The temporary rocks that have been placed to check the erosion got washed away in the gushing waves. It is estimated that the rocks, placed at cost of Rs 70 lac have been swallowed up by the sea.

In Alankar, a tree fell on the HT line, bringing down three electric poles. Traffic was hit for an hour in Sharavuru following the incident. In the rubber farm of Nadgil Shagi, as many as 100 trees faced the brunt of strong winds, it was reported. Besides these incidents, many electric poles have been uprooted in many parts of Alankar. The extent of loss caused by the damages is yet to be estimated by the revenue department.

Land slips damaged seven houses in two villages at Uppinangady. The house of Mohammad, a resident of Ninnikal was hit by the collapse of a hillock. In a similar incident, the under-construction house of Lateef was also damaged. Three were no reports of causalities or injuries.

The loss due to damage of houses in Uppinangady and Nekkiladi was estimated at Rs 8 lac.

The members of Ninnikal village panchayat, Rajgopal Hegde and Radha Vishwanth who visited the damaged houses assured immediate aide to the affected families. The Nekkiladi village panchayat president along with village accountant inspected the houses and said reports on the loss incurred would be sent to the government of Karnataka.

Kinnigoli and surrounding villages witnessed heavy rain and winds on Saturday night and Sunday early morning. A tree fell on the road near the church in the early hours of Sunday, disturbing the smooth flow of traffic. Locals immediately swung into action by cutting the branches of the trees and clearing the road for vehicles within a few minutes.

    Nice pics by DW!!

Seeing the damaged house pics, people should be very very careful before buying houses as at many places they are built without following sound engg. principles like no retainer walls, across a slope having boulders, etc. which over a period of time could prove disastrous and cause heavy loss to life and property!!

Many places in the outskirts of the city are waiting for a Utarakhand like washout calamity to happen, if you see the locations where they have been dangerously built!!! Jai Hind!!

Nice photographs showing the enormous damage to houses and roads. People can realise the risk of building houses ( with their hard earned money ) especially near to hill sides or river sides where torrential rains could cause mudslides or enormous winds can cause trees to fall..... but a small note at the bottom of each photograph about the location could be very useful to us the readers. This is a humble suggestion from a humble reader which I am sure Daijiworld can easily implement,
