Mangalore, Jul 15: The foundation stone for the new building of Milagres Degree College was laid here on Tuesday July 15 by the bishop of Mangalore diocese Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza.

Speaking after laying the foundation stone and blessing the occasion, Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza said, "Today is a great day for Milagres people, especially to those who are pursuing and had pusued their education in Milagres Institutions.

"We first started with an elementary school up to 5th standard, at a time when there were not many educational instituions in the city. We then began with the high school, PU and other educational branches. The degree college was started in the year 2010."

"These are days of materialism and people want to show off in any way possible. No one is satisfied with what one has in hand but wants more. For this reason, parents also look at the infrastructure at the campus and select the best college for their children. It is for this reason, we came up with a plan for having a new building for the degree college, so as to meet the expectations of a large number of people," he said.

"We not only focus on academic excellence, but also encourage the students to be good citizens and leaders and make them contribute towards the society. We also insist our students on living a well-informed life to face challenges of the society, along with imparting value-based education," he added.

"The estimated cost of the project is Rs 10 crore and it is proposed to be completed within 15 months."

Fr Valerian D’Souza, parish priest of Milagres and the administrator of Milagres Institutions, Fr Francis Xavier Gomes, principal and campus in charge, Fr G W Vas, Fr Sunil, Fr Santosh, corporators Vinayraj A C and Ranganath Kini, Milagres Church vice-president Ivan D’Souza, Praveen Saldanha of Saldanha Associates, John Monteiro, Rachana president, Savil Mascarenhas, members of parish council, alumni and others were present.

I simply can not understand the need of one more college at the heart of the city!! The Milagres area is so much congested that it would have been better if the space was used for some Art , library or cultural or left alone for sports activity! Mangalore is has been flooded with college and educational institutions and majority of the students are from other states. Why can't our religious leaders concentrate on social, charity and other developmental work rather than building institutions after institutions and wasting public money? And we complain of shortage of Priests for religious work? 60% of them are working in Medical and Educational institutions!!

It is a very good initiative of the Bishop to start a degree college.

But some how or other it does not go well with the charism of the Diocese.

Diocese must not be busy with educational work but rather it should be very much busy with parish spiritual needs and Evangelical activities. Offering daily masses, hearing confessions and be busy with the Holy Sacramental life of the Church, which builds up the families and deepens their fragile Catholic Faith.

Educational work must be left to the Religious, either male or female congregations. They do a fairly good job in imparting education and training the youngsters.

It would be very good if some of the Mangalore and Bangalore Dioceses clergy opts to work in Gulbarga, Belgaum, Bellary and Shivamogga dioceses, since these diocese are Missionary dioceses and they are in need of active, energetic young priests to work as missionaries.

Our Bishops of Mangalore and Bangalore diocese must persuade their young priests to go to work in these above mentioned mission Dioceses and spread the Good News of our Lord Jesus and not be busy with education in the well developed cities.

Come on fathers, take up the challenge and invitation of the Lord to work for His Kingdom and make good use of your Vocation to priesthood. Jesus will bless you for your unconditional "YES" to your CALL. God Bless you!
