Mangalore: One-way experiment fails, it's back to old traffic rules

Mangalore, Jul 19: Having faced stiff opposition from the public to the imposition new one-way traffic rules at Balmatta-Bendorewell, the city traffic police department from Saturday July 19 decided to revert to the old traffic regulations.

The route has now been cleared for two-way flow of traffic, which means the vehicles are not required to take a roundabout to commute in these places.

Speaking to daijiworld, assistant commissioner of police (traffic) Uday N Nayak said the department had introduced the rule as an experiment to study its feasibility and check traffic snarls.

"We have now found that the one-way rule is not feasible for the route and it has created a few problems," he said.

The ACP refused to comment when asked to reveal the prime reasons for reverting to the old rules and said he would not like to speak on the reviewed decision.

The department earlier had been criticized by auto drivers and hoteliers as they suffered huge loss in their profit due to the new rule. In the recent KDP (Karnataka Development Programme) meeting, MLC Ivan D'Souza also took a jibe at the traffic department for imposing the rule which he said had affected daily commuters.

The auto drivers, hoteliers and a few residents along with doctors of a hospital located in the area had sent a memorandum to the traffic department and to the district administration. Corporators led by Azeez Kudroli too had submitted a memorandum demanding a review of the traffic rule. This apart, the new route had also witnessed a number of accidents and traffic jams, particularly near Colaco hospital.

Now what? Looking at the pics it seems like many-way traffic. Fine...brake-n-go as long as there is no speeding.

Good that the old traffic system is restored. I request the ACP-Traffic that kindly remove and move the bus stops at-least 1/2 furlong away from any circles. Take stern action against the bus drivers who stop in between. Bus drivers are the main people who do not follow traffic rules. The size of the bus and their uncontrolled movements is actually creating havoc on the roads. I think no other remedy is required.
The long route buses once they enter the city limits they should also follow the speed limits.
The buses should invariably should go into the bays or to the side in the bus stops.
All the best to the traffic authorities.

vested interests - nothing else. We will remain in this disorganized state forever. One way was good but self interests of a few can kill Mangalore. Just wait. Politicians don't work for the betterment of the general public bit by their survival, giving into bribery. It is too late and ugly in Mangalore and public cannot help it as long as corruption prevails.

Currently one way was the good idea and solution which needed further refinement. The problems with one way should have been discussed and addressed to rather than MCC & RTO falling prey to builders, business establishments, doctors and even a school lobby which did not provide any ping and pick-up facility. Practically I was getting extra mileage and time saved for my daily travel with the diversion, yes the kankanady bottelneck and Tower clock was the issue. However nobody questioning the outdated, back breaking unhealthy rubber speed breakers installed everywhere. These are banned in UK where it is manufactured and most part of the world. The MCC & RTO are giving business to those companies to dump these in our country. With these speed breakers doctors can make good business soon

Yes I too agree with you. RTO office is the main culprit for the traffic congestion. There are new vehicles coming for registration, old vehiclez for fitness certificates, visitors, new DL applicants etc. are always there. So concerned authorities take immediate actions on this. Most important being our traffic sense while driving on road.

one way movement was very useful for daily traffic management.their was smooth movement of vehicles even at peak hours.appriciated ACP UDAI NAIK's revolutionary steps towards smooth traffic flow.but politics and loby's killed everything.

Whatever we do unless roads are broadened nothing is going to work out with the number of vehicles increasing everyday.Buildings are built everywhere in the roadsides but roads and footpaths are ignored.People will not let thier property for road widening because they're not paid a decent value. In the Gulf country the Govt pays high price for people who let thier
property for infrastructure development ,here too they should think about such scheme..hopefully.

Well done sir Udaya Nayak. We people who're using this route frequently faced lot of problems, also school going children. There few who sit somewhere one corner of the city and just comment for the sake of writing something here it looks easy. Few of them never used this road, still talk about development as if it starts from Bendurwell Balmatta and bendur cross road.

Its not because of the one way or two two way the traffic gets blocked.did one way solve the problem near bendoor to balmatta junction?first of all there is no parking lots provided by the builders.A building has approx 50 offices and parking provision is for only 5 cars/10 two wheelers that is the max they provide sometimes less.most of the time the traffic flow is blocked because of the impatient and nuisance driving which creates traffic jams especially near the circles. The traffic department works hard in the sunlight and rains, we also should understand to co-operate.And lastly, the people are not ready to give a centimeter of land for the broadening of roads.the solution to this problem lies within us .

I felt one way was a best solution! though 1KM drive was taking additional from me, Drive was very smooth without any Jam! I see Businessman's Lobby behind it made feel this system failure. very sad to know this. Getting stuck in traffic is biggest stress in life! And another thing it is a fault of MUDA and MCC issues licence to the commercial developers without any proper sufficient car parking facility, basement converted into shops. Make it mandate while issuing the licence every 250 sqft commercial space should have proper two or three covered car park. Not the MCC to collect parking fee from public while vehicle parked front of the commercial building.

I would rather say that commercial or residential building should have pay parking facility of couple of floors. Accordingly, they should get more number of floor as bonus. This would clear some of the parking problems.

Mohammed Bin Tuglak was probably far better during his time.
In all developing countries, people find solution to problems well in time before the problem actually erupts. Unfortunately here in India, we are used to wait for problem to occur and then the only solution we are used to is, running away from the problem or resolve it by creating one more problem.
If there is traffic jam, creating one way is not a solution. You are creating one more problem for all public. Even the road maps cannot be used by an outsider because, the road is there but you cannot use the road in both direction. ONly locals will know this.
This oneway sickness started in Bangalore and it has now started creeping into other places. Bangalore can be renamed as "City of One Ways" instead of garden city or air conditioned city. Gone are those days anyway.
Now dont start the same sickness in Mangalore. Think of elevated roads, subways etc or else knock off the buildings around. Who cares if the building are knocked off, only the politicians perhaps.
Dont put the public into trouble by creating oneways, no parkings, rickshaw stands etc. when there is no space for waling even.

these 2 roads from Kankanadi till Hampankatta as NO PARKING ZONE at road side.

    2.Control scrawling of city buses.
3.Cancell all auto parking from Kankanadi till Hampankatta.
    4.Restrict stopage at bus stops

Traffic jam will be only on dreams if administration can implement these factors.

TRY THIS FOR AT LEAST A WEEK TO FEEL THE DIFFERENCE.
