Dubai: Passenger from Udupi with deformed passport lands in trouble

Michael D'Silva, Dubai

Dubai, Jul 19: Steven Fernandes was a first-time traveller to the UAE. His excitement turned into nightmare when immigration authorities at Sharjah airport put him under investigation for holding a deformed Indian passport.

Steven, from Kemmannu, Udupi was on employment visa and was traveling out of India for the first time. He landed in Sharjah on Thursday July 10 night.

Initially, the authorities suspected him of tampering the passport, but investigators cleared him after inspecting the passport and concluding that it was a binding error.

The center pages of the passport were malformed during the binding process and even passed though the stricter quality checks at the passport office.

Steven was given an option to exit and return on a new passport.

The ordeal ended by the relentless effort of senior manager of the company Gladson Ammanna and the timely intervention of the Indian consulate officials who replaced his passport by issuing a new one within three days. He was released on Thursday July 17.

The incident brings into question the awareness among passport control officials at Mangalore International Airport about the consequences of such malformed passport as travel document. As shown in the photograph, the exit stamp is right on the deformed page.

Also, the onus also falls on the the passport holder, in this case Steven, to check the passport for malformation, errors in details/printing/binding and report it to the passport office within specified days.

    Either watchman or Chairmen

Firstly no doubt its department mistake that while issuing new passport they should have properly checked it.

Secondly its passenger mistakes also. We are living in era of modern technologies.Hence people should have common sense that any documents while receiving should be checked and returned back if any errors or mistakes.

People knows to return back if currency is not good.People knows to return back if book/paper id not good.People knows to return back if the items they purchased from shop is not good. Then why not for passport?

So UAE is right in their job.But i appreciate the company's/Consulate's timely intervention.

    off course Adil,
pakistani passports are far better then us because they can increase or decrease their age every time when they visit back their home-country to stay as long as possible in gulf.
pay ransom amount to authority & decrease your age.

Quality of indian passports is poor they can not withstand very cold or very hot weather or extremely humid or dry weather . Exit, entry stamp ink very often corrodes the pages. I have changed three passports in five years.Passport authority charges money from citizens and provides poor quality passports. what is said true even pakistani passports are of better quality. Hope passports quality will improve.

First it was the girls , now it is the boys also who are put under scrutiny like in Sharjah before getting the final O.K for marriage..Strict scrutiny before getting this important 'Passport'. Whether to 'hell' or heaven' depends on the boy's fate.
    Girl's fate you ask?
Don't you all know the adage...Naari Swargake Dhaari?

Precci..it is very easy for you to comment here as to why he has not checked his passport. Read the news properly. He is the first timer to gulf and I don't think he is aware of the consequences of these type of errors by Indian passport authorities. It is shame on Mangalore immigration for their negligence. Don't blame poor Steven.

    Dear Ajay

Yes i agree he is first timer for gulf and in the passport images clear showing deformed pages. Mangalore immigration also the responsible of this. But my strange question is why not steevan checked his passport pages before when he recived by poastal. it is hardly 10-15 pages. we should clear ourself that, all the given details in passport is propelry printed or not also we should overlook every pages. basically it is general information to understand also help us to avoide such a type of incident.

S.M. Nawaz..everybody is not intelligent like you. Just because Steven didn't check his passport, he cannot be held responsible for this nuisance. It is passport authority in India and immigration officials at Mangalore airport are responsible for this menace.

Some people specially those who are visiting foreign countries for the first time may not know the importance of passport. They should be educated on this. There can be many other reason as one of them is that persons presence is urgently required there so take a chance or second reason is that visa may be expiring shortly etc. At the same time immigration authorities are also to be blamed because they should not take any chance as far as security is concerned.

Steven Fernandes @ fault. Some are how Company manger and Indian Consulate helped him in the needy hours and such services are not available for others most of the time in such circumstances.Steven must thank Company and Consulates and bear in mind that PASSPORT is very very valuable document which should be in order and d if need arises.
