Mangalore, Jul 20: Grief struck two families, at Moodbidri and Bajpe, here on Sunday July 20 as five children drowned in two separate incidents.

In the incident reported at Mijar under Bajpe police limits, three sisters drowned at a quarry located behind their house.

The deceased have been identified as Vanishree (12), Meghashree (11) and Yakshita (6), children of coolie workers Vasu Shettigar and Seeta.

It is said that when the children did not return home after play even though it started raining, their mother went searching for them and found their footwear near the pond at the quarry.

Seeta at once alerted the locals who rushed to the spot and dived into the pond. Though they managed to bring the children out of the water and rushed them to hospital, all three breathed their last on the way.

Mangalore North MLA Mohiuddin Bava who visited the family expressed his sympathies and handed over a cheque of Rs 4.5 lac, that is Rs 1.5 lac for each deceased child, as compensation.

A case has been registered in Bajpe police station.

In the other incident, reported at Malady village in Belvai, Moodbidri, two little girls met watery grave when they went to play near a quarry.

The deceased have been identified as Suraksha (7) and Sukanya (4), daughters of Suresh and Sita.

It is said that the when the girls did not return home long after they went out to play, the family grew anxious and along with the locals, searched for them. It then came to light that the girls had fallen into a pond at the quarry and drowned.

Fire service and Moodbidri police rushed to the spot.

A case has been registered in Moodbidri police station.

Very well said Neil, Swimming should be a part of everyone's skill set in the coastal region. I think parents need to teach the children of swimming and warn them of the dangers of water.
Every schools we can't expect them to give swimming lessons, we know how our schools are.

    May the innocents souls RIP!!

FIRST AND FOREMOST THE SO CALLED "AUTHORITIES" SHOULD FIND OUT WHO ARE THE OWNER OF THESE QUARRIES AND SEE WHETHER THEY HAD THE VARIOUS PERMISSIONS TO QUARRY??????

EVERY PLACE WHERE THERE IS GOOD QUALITY OF LATERITE STONES LARGE SCALE ILLEGAL CUTTING OF LATERITE STONES IS GOING ON SINCE LONG AND DURING THE MONSOONS THIS HUGE CUT CRATERS GET FILLED TO THE BRIM WITH WATER LEADING TO SUCH TYPE OF INCIDENTS WHERE SO MANY INNOCENT PEOPLE LOSE THEIR LIVES FOR NO FAULT OF THEIRS!!

THE PEOPLE WHO DO THIS STONE CUTTING HAVE MINTED MONEY WITHOUT PAYING A SINGLE PAISA TAX TO THE GOVT. AND LEFT THE HUGE CRATERS FOR THE "POOR AND INNOCENT" CHILDREN AND PEOPLE TO DIE!!

IT IS HIGH TIME THE AUTHORITIES INSTEAD OF ANNOUNCING MEASLY COMPENSATION GET INTO THE ROOT OF THE MATTER AND GET THE MAIN PEOPLE WHO ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THESE CRATERS TO TASK AND ACT ON THEM AS PER THE LANDS OF LAW (THERE ARE MANY WHICH CAN BE APPLIED) FOR SUCH CALLOUS ACTS!!!
BESIDES THIS LOTS OF ILLEGAL EXCAVATION WORK IS GOING ON WHERE DEEP TRENCHES ARE ARE MADE AND THEN THE LAND LEVELLED TO MAKE INTO SMALL PEICES AND SELL TO PROSPECTIVE GULLIBLE PEOPLE!!

WE ARE IN THE FACE OF A UTTARAKHAND LIKE WASHOUT WHICH WILL HAPPEN IF NOT TODAY BUT TOMORROW!!! Jai Hind!!

    Swimming ? forget it.
our school system and the parents first give priority to Mobile phones and how use Facebook and watsup.
without mobile phones their children can not survive you know.and that too internet is must,
i have seen parents going daily house work washing clothes and vessels into other houses but their children are given mobile sets and facebook connections.what you say about this?

These are extremely dangerous for kids. The fencing should have been there in first place to protect kids and proper warning should be given to kids about such dangers.
