Bangalore, Sep 16: The members of Kanara Entrepreneurs (KE) met on August 22, 2014 at the Grand Magrath Hotel, Bangalore.

Compere Allan Aranha started the event highlighting the importance of effective self-introduction. He conducted an activity to ponder over the preparedness of individuals to introduce oneself and the organization when faced with an unexpected opportunity to do so.

President Mark D’Souza welcomed the members and briefed about the recent activities of KE Bangalore and also explained the plans lined up for the year.  He said about 100 students of Christ University had an industrial visit to two of the KE Member’s factories –Deccan Group and Brilliant Printers.

This initiative was in continuation of KE’s MOU with Christ University and KE’s endeavor of nurturing entrepreneurship. Coordinator, Prof Sridharan expressed that it was an opportunity for students who would like to be future entrepreneurs as it helped them to understand the nuances of businesses and the efforts that are needed to be not just good but great entrepreneurs.

Mark also spoke of the programme and initiative to encourage and enroll new small and medium businessman into KE. He also highlighted the achievement of the KE Speakers forum and its completion of the second batch with the final session scheduled on September 1, 2014.

He elaborately covered the key points of a good listener. Rego emphasized that good conversation starts with good listening. “We have two ears and only one mouth - to speak less and listen more. Generally we listen in order to reply to the person talking to us but not to understand the person and reply. Also, in the current education set-up, listening skills are given less importance, whereas writing, reading and speaking are accorded higher importance”. Rego also spoke about various barriers to listening effectively.

Holding the audience captivated with the very useful and practical presentation, he then explained his version of 10 commandments for good listening which included:Stop Talking, Put talker at ease, Show that you want to listen, Remove distraction, Empathize with talker, Be Patient, Hold your temper, Avoid arguments and criticisms, Ask questions and Stop Talking.

To further drive home the point of the importance of effective listening, Rego then gave a practical demonstration by having an exercise carried out with the help of volunteers.

He concluded that a good listener Shows respect, Builds loyalty, Attracts People, Builds Relationships and Knowledge. The meeting ended with George Timothy proposing the vote of thanks. This was followed by a fellowship dinner.
