UAE : 5-year-old Indian girl drowns in UAQ; mother rescued


UAQ, Sep 22: A five-year-old Indian girl drowned in Umm Al Quwain on Thursday night, while her mother was rescued by coastguards.

Anagha Shammy – a KG1 student of New Indian School, Umm Al Quwain – was returning from hospital with her mother when the tragedy happened.

The child is the youngest daughter of Shammy and Soumya Shammy. Her older sister was at home when the incident happened.

Umm Al Quwain Police is investigating the case.

Meanwhile, Rafeek Rahim, Principal, New Indian School, UAQ, told Emirates24|7 that the school was informed about the unfortunate incident. “We visited the family.

The older child is also a student of our school.

The family has been paying fees regularly.”

He added that students who face problems are counseled and parents with financial problems are given fee waivers.

Basheer, Indian Association president, said that the mother is now informed about the death of her child and has been shifted to a hospital in Ras Al Khaimah.

According to him, the child first ventured into the sea and the mother followed to rescue her.

The girl’s mother is allegedly suffering from depression, according to social workers who know the family.

The family hails from Kerala, India. The child’s father has a company in UAQ.
