Kannada to be made compulsory medium of instruction at primary level

Bengaluru, Mar 19: The State Cabinet on Thursday decided to stand firm on its decision on making Kannada as the compulsory medium of instruction in primary education from Class I to V in Karnataka.

For imparting the primary education in mother tongue or Kannada till Class V, the Cabinet decided to drop the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act 2009 as far as practicable.

The RTE Act is in the Concurrent List and the State has powers to amend the Act as per its requirement, contended a minister.

The amended Act would be sent to the Governor or for the President for the ascent.

"We are exercising our rights as legislators to make law. Let us see what will happen later," a Minister said.
