Three held for betting on World Cup final

New Delhi, March 30 (IANS): Three people were arrested here on Sunday for operating a betting syndicate during the cricket World Cup final between Australia and New Zealand, police said on Monday.

Acting on a tip-off, police raided a house in north Delhi's old Sabzi Mandi area and arrested Gaurav, 30, Amit Sharma, 32, and Mohit, 32.

"The syndicate had accepted bets totalling nearly Rs.75 lakh on the match. One betting sheet, one laptop and 10 mobile phones were seized," Deputy Commissioner of Police Madhur Verma said.

This was the second cricket betting racket busted in the city since the beginning of the cricket World Cup.

Police had arrested a 57-year-old man on March 19 for operating a betting syndicate here during the India-Bangladesh World Cup quarterfinal match.
