Cadet Asian Wrestling to start on Thursday


New Delhi, June 9 (IANS): The annual Cadet Asian Wrestling Championship will be held at the K.D. Jadhav Wrestling Stadium in the Indira Gandhi Indoor Sports Complex June 11-14.

The sub-junior tournament will be held across three formats -- Free Style, Greco Roman and Female. This time 112 Free Style, 89 Greco Roman and 66 Female wrestlers will be competing for 10 gold, 10 silver and 20 bronze medals in each category.

"Most participants have arrived here by now. With 19 countries, including all traditionally strong wrestling countries like Iran, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Japan, South Korea, North Korea, Mongolia and Tajikistan along with hosts India will participate in the tournament," said Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brijbhushan Sharan Singh on Tuesday.

Last year, when the tourney was held in Thailand, Indian Free style grapplers were the overall winners. This time around, WFI is fielding a team of 30 grapplers, 10 for each category.

The competition will be supervised by United World Wrestling (UWW) Asia president Chang Kew Kim and UWW delegate Kim Ik Jong.

India had last hosted this tournament in Pune in 1998.

The Indian team:

Free Style: Suraj Aswal (42 kg), Monu (46 kg), Joytiba (50 kg), Naveen (54 kg), Ashok (58 kg), Suraj Kokate (63 kg), Sachin Rathi (69 kg), Sanjeet (76 kg), Arun (85 kg), Nasir Hussain (100 kg).

Greco Roman: Ajay (42 kg), Manoj (46 kg), Pardeep (50 kg), Vijay (54 kg), Ashish (58 kg), Manjeet (63 kg), Kuldeep (69 kg), Sajan (76 kg), Deepak (85 kg), Sunit (100 kg).

Female: Ankush (38 kg), Annu Devi (40 kg), Anju (43 kg), Divya Tomar (46 kg), Kiran (49 kg), Reena (52 kg), Gesu Ramganga (56 kg), Nisha (60 kg), Tina (65 kg), Divya Kakran (70 kg).
