Mangaluru: Police crack down on drunk driving - Register 60 cases in three hours

Mangaluru, Jul 17: The police department has decided to act tough against drivers who get drunk at night and drive vehicles inconsistently, posing risks to other road users. The Suratkal traffic police who conducted this operation at Haleangady on Wednesday July 15 night registered 60 cases in three hours and collected fine of about Rs 12,000. These also included violation of seat belt rule.

Police inspector, Manjunath, who has been trying hard to improve the conditions within the jurisdiction of this traffic police station, has been leading this drive from the front. He draws able support from police sub-inspectors, Gopalakrishna Bhat and Purushotham in this endeavour.

The sight of policemen stopping vehicles at midnight seemed to have caught drunk drivers unawares. A number of people, who were driving vehicles in drunken state with loud music blaring from their vehicles, without following traffic rules at night too were fined. Breath analyzers were used to prove intoxication levels of those who tried to argue that they were not drunk. The action of police in trying to contain drunk driving came in for lavish praise from locals. Many of the offenders were truck drivers.

The police expressed surprise about so many cases having been booked in a matter of three hours, and such a huge fine having been collected during this drive. There were cases in which vehicles were borrowed from others just to visit far off places to consume liquor and get a 'kick' out of it. People feel that accidents which occur at night might come down drastically if police conduct such operations at least once a week in this region.

Police have no authority for collecting fine in case of Drunk driving, they have to seize the vehicle and let magistrate decide the fine.

Police have fished a lot of drunkers and offenders.collected a big amount.I just think besides officialcollection, unofficial rupees slided into the pocket.anyway they should often control People without warning mostly on feast times,.Not only at night but during day times buses and bikes .how many times innocent People lost life because of their arrogant driving, with or without licence?Police also should be honest and without recieving Money for wrong driving, accidents .

Good initiative by Mangalore Police... I suspect about fine collected.. It is minimum 3000 fine for drunken driving in Bangalore.. Believe fine is same across Karnataka.. so 12000 fine collected??????.. Something is definitely wrong with the total fine collected..

I guess drug testing is more necessary while driving than drinking. Grow up people open your eyes and look around. The youth are into drugs nowadays and they get these drugs so easily. They are also in worse states than the people who drink. So please start drug testing instead of drink testing.

They might have more than 60000, but pocketed 48000 and submitted fines of only 12000. I do not trust the police a single bit as they are prone to corruption every step..

Only Rs 12000 in fine, very surprising, 12 cases of drunken driving would have got the dept 12k. ...seat belt 100 understood but drunk driving is not less than 1000 & upon that court case, LOOKS like COPS too made their day, CHEERS

If police will ride outside every bar, govt will get more revenue. it will be easy to catch. OR close BAR and wine shop to avoid accident and get good atmosphere in home.

repeatedly caught with drunk driving cancel driving license. reckless driving and excess horns should also be tackled for safety with repeated offenders DL cancellation.if authorities can control trucks and buses then 99% of the job is done.

Good. In Udupi district police is just useless, they are fit to check license & insurance of two wheelers. They don't catch drivers of private buses, who drink & drive as they receive "mamuli" I know a bus driver who drinks & drives daily, but police don't take action due to money power.

Traffic Police are in action. This kind of action orientation will definitely yield the desired results.

'DRIVE AND DO NOT DRINK - DRINK AND DO NOT DRIVE is a common slogan in North America.

It is good to see that with the meager number of Police personnel, the department is very active.

There is a lot more to be done in Mangalore City itself. With plans that the department has,it will not be long before the traffic of fences in the city are brought to a minimal.

Drunk n Drive, high beam in the night and road rage as well because of drunk n drive. If police able to contain all these,I think accident can come down considerably. In three hours sixty cases booked that means something wrong with this generation and indeed it is a very serious issue.
