Mangalore, Sept 28: Nearly 700 fishing boats were stuck for the past four days owing to rough sea at the fisheries harbour of Old Mangalore Port. Out of these, few started sailing on Thursday September 27, bringing some sort of relief both to the fishermen and fish traders.

Speaking to reporters, Suresh Kumar Ullal, deputy director, Fisheries, said that daily 300 boats arrive at the port. Fishermen who found themselves difficult to fish owing to the bad weather conditions returned back to the harbour four days ago along with the boats, he added.

Suresh further said that as the sea was rough till Wednesday September 26, they could not sail. If the weather conditions remain the same on Friday September 28, as it was on Thursday, only then they will be able to sail, he informed.

The boats will be in trouble if the wind travels at 65 kmph speed, he said.

It was warned by the Meteorological Department on Tuesday September 25 that the speed of the wind across Arabian Sea was likely to go up to 50 kmph.

Fish traders and fishermen have been affected to some extent, said Kumar. But it did not affect the market, he added.
