Mangalore, Oct 15: The first Graduation Day and Awards Day function of A J Institute of Dental Sciences was held here at the College premises on Sunday, October 14.

Delivering the convocation address, Dr Anil Kohli, president of the Dental Council of India (DCI) said that the main objective of a committed professional like the dentist is to ensure that dentistry  at it highest level of excellence, reaches the common man.

Touching on the subject of medical tourism, he informed that in modern times dental services are expected to play a major role in promoting health tourism. Only if the dentists provide best possible dental treatment at affordable rates can they help in promoting health tourism, he declared.

DCI will adopt new measures in order to improve the quality of dental education in the institution, which will in turn attract foreign students too, he informed. 

Further he stated that various programmes including ‘Continuing Dental Education’ programmes, will be held to improve the quality of teaching. Exhorting the dental students he said that their education in dentistry does not end with the graduation, in-fact it begins with your graduation, he advised.

In order to keep updating their knowledge they should keep in touch with their alma mater, Dr Kohli added. 

Dr Kohli presented certificates to graduates on the occasion. Moreover, he also gave away the ‘Best Outgoing Student award’ to Dr Dhairya Shah. Nearly 28 students graduated in the first batch of BDS.

Dr P S Prabhakaran, vice-chancellor, Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences and Dr B H Sripathi Rao, DCI executive council member spoke on the occasion. A J Shetty, president, Laxmi Memorial Education Trust presided over the function.

Dr B Sureshchandra, principal, Y Bharath Shetty, chairman, Student Welfare Council, Pradeep Shetty, DCU member, K S Banga, secretary, Indian Endodontic Association and others were present on the occasion.
