Mangalore, Nov 27: Youth Congress urges the governor of Karnataka, to order probe into the misappropriation of funds in distributing free cycles to high-school girls during the reign of coalition government, informed Bondala Jagannath Shetty, president, DK district Youth Congress here at the press conference on Monday November 26.

The finance ministry has released Rs 35 to 36 crore for 1, 75, 558 bicycles.  In other words the ministry has released Rs 2,030 for each cycle.  However, the actual cost of each cycle should not exceed Rs 1,400 to Rs 1,600. This proves the misappropriation of funds under the distribution of bicycles to high school girls, he alleged.

The misappropriation of funds by the coalition government is also apparent in the purchase of 2,45,300 cycles for high school boys, for which the government has spent Rs 49,95,9,000.  Hence, it is essential to initiate a higher level probe in this regard.

Basavaraj Horatti, former education minister had promised during the state assembly proceedings that probe will be ordered into the misappropriation charges.  However, no such actions are being taken in this regard, while Yeddyurappa has again decided to purchase the bicycles at the rate of Rs 2,050 per bicycle, which gives rise to doubts over misappropriation.

Vishwas Das, P K Sudhir, S V Vinayraj and Mendon were present at the press conference.
