Mangalore, Nov 28: Ex-CM, Veerappa Moily-led Union Reform Commission has advised the union government, in order to simplify the property tax and cancel octroi.
Further, it has advised the government to increase the penalty payable on crimes related to violation of civil laws. It has recommended to effect amendments to the law, to entrust the responsibility of levying the taxes to such crimes by the municipal officers, in their report on local governance.
Property tax should be ascertained on the basis of the market value of the respective locality. It should be revised every year on the basis of prevailing market value. The state governments are advised to make necessary provisions to recover the revenue losses, owing to the abolition of octroi, as stated in their report.
