Supreme Court agrees to examine Maha anti-beef law

Sep 3 (TOI): The Supreme Court on Friday agreed to examine the legality of the Maharashtra law that banned slaughter of bovine animals and made possession of beef a crime.

A bench of Justices AK Sikri and DY Chandrachud entertained a bunch of petitions challenging a judgment of the Bombay HC, which gave limited relief by terming that possession of beef sourced from outside the state would not be a crime.

The HC had upheld the law imposing a ban on slaughter of bulls and oxen in addition to the earlier ban on slaughter of cows.
