Bengaluru, Jan 3: The Supreme Court allowed the State of Karnataka to file a new petition about the Mahadayi water dispute, with the Mahadayi Water Dispute Tribunal and asked the state government to provide 'fresh' and 'accurate' data in its new petition to the tribunal. This order by the Supreme Court was passed on Monday, January 2, while hearing a 'special leave petition' filed by Karnataka seeking an interim order from the Tribunal about sharing the river water to tackle the drinking water crisis in towns of northern Karnataka.

The State Government, represented by senior counsel Fali Nariman, moved the Supreme Court with a special leave petition after the tribunal dismissed its petition to release 7 TMCft water for Kalasa-Banduri Nala drinking water project in August 2016.

Karnataka’s Water Resources Minister M B Patil said the State Government would discuss the issue and approach the tribunal again seeking the release of 7 tmcft of water from the river Mahadayi.

The SLP was filed in the apex court after CM Siddaramaiah convened an all-party meeting following the tribunal’s order.

Siddaramaiah had urged the Central government to intervene to resolve the dispute amicably.
