Mangalore: New Zonal Colour Code for Buses from May

MANGALORE, Apr 1: Traffic congestion in the busy Hampankatta area here is likely to be cleared after a month as all buses cannot enter the State Bank of India city bus terminus from May.

The Regional Transport Authority (RTA) took a decision to this effect at a meeting here on Monday.

Colour coding will help identifying buses which have permits to operate from the SBI bus terminus and the service bus stand. It will also help identifying buses which have been permitted to operate from Mangaladevi, Kankanady, Kottara and Mallikatta satellite bus-stands in the city.

M. Maheshwar Rao, chairman, RTA, who presided over the meeting, said that buses which had been given permits to ply from SBI terminus and service bus stand would be under Zone I. They would be pasted with stickers of a specific colour. Buses given permission to ply from satellite bus-stands to other places would come under Zone II and carry stickers of different colours, he said.

“The buses will be required to adhere to their zones. They cannot enter other zones. Violation of zonal rules may result in cancellation of their permits,” Mr. Rao said and added that stickers of specific colours would be pasted on all the buses within one month.

At present, many buses which have permission to ply from satellite bus-stands to other areas are also plying from the SBI terminus. This has resulted in traffic congestion in the heart of the city.

R. Sadashiva, Regional Transport Officer, Mangalore, said that the Transport Department conducted a survey of buses entering the SBI bus terminus and service bus stand on February 21. It was found that buses made 3,700 trips to these bus-stands between 5 a.m. and 10 p.m. that day. Of them, 50 per cent did not have permission to enter these two bus-stands.

It was decided at the meeting that a committee, headed by the Superintendent of Police of Dakshina Kannada, be constituted to prepare a report on re-opening of pre-paid taxi counters at the Central Railway Station here.

It was decided to re-open a pre-paid taxi counter at the KSRTC bus-stand at Bejai.

Rao deliberated with the autorickshaw drivers and people on a proposal to revise the auto fares in the city. However, no decision was taken.

Why can't all our private bus owners join together & form a corporation like BEST in Mumbai. All city buses should have a uniform designer painting with ads. on both the sides of the bus for extra revenue. All the buses should run by the single corporate body. T

his corporate body should provide extra carriageway on the roads it is plying with uniform bus stops for these buses to stop for passengers. The practice of these private buses stopping for passangers anywhere that too a coming bus opposite to another going one almost on the middle of the road which blocks the long distance movement of vehicles on the National & state Highways. The will check competition & overspeeding to reach the bus owners target.

The great meeting on the traffic problem facing by the general public of mangalore by the authorities surprised me.The white elephants sitting in air conditioned room trying to solve the traffic problem. Funny again remembering me about TUGLAQ DARBAR. General public requested to pressure them for the following. 1. Bus route numbers must be reset based on the points they starts. Bus number 1 to 99 must be given to buses starting from State bank , 100 to 199 Mangaladevi , 200 to 299 2.Service buses must not seen in Hampankatta Area , they must enrouted outskirts, Buses from udupi must be run kankanadi, Mangaladevi , pandeshwar and bus stand and vell verse in return trips

I would suggest that a common color to a bus is to be given to all city buses and another common color is given to buses traveling outside the Mangalore areas. This will make a common man understand better and also gives uniformity to public transport, in which might result in less competition between the buses

While appreciating the decision to have a color code system I would like to suggest two things from which the common man will be helped.1.) Numbering system of city bus routes should be unique to the extent possible.Suffixing alphabets A-Z to the numbers creates lot of confusions .

For example,Route No.15 starts from either Mangaladevi or Kankanady for various destinations!

2.)I t is time to name the Bus terminals at least now instead of calling State Bank and Service! Why it should be still state Bank when we have so many other land Marks and historical names for the locality?
