Mangalore, Jun 9:  A function was organized in the city on Sunday June 8 by the Rotary Club of Mangalore Hillside and Sri Dharmastala Manjunatheshwara College of Business Management, on the occasion of  World Environment Day.

Suratkal NITK academic dean Dr G Sriniketan, who was the chief guest of the programme, warned the people of the long term ill affects of the rising levels of carbon dioxide in the environment. High levels of this harmful substance leads to speedy global warming. Researchers have predicted, that if the situation does not improve, 60% of the population will be suffering from cardio vascular and breathing problems by the year 2010, he said.

Speaking on the subject of the 'role of citizens in environmental protection', he stressed the need for creation of increased awareness among the people about the need to protect our environment. Out of greed, the human race is exerting unbearable pressures on the environment, ill affects of which are evident from the rising levels of oceans and seas, Sriniketan averred.

Delivering introductory address at the programme, senior environment officer of the State Pollution Control Board B N Ramesh Kumar suggested to service organisations like Rotary Club, to announce prizes to people working for environment conservation, and also to distribute saplings to their members for growing trees and reward those who excel in this activity, as part of environment conservation initiatives.

Rotary Club president Prasadraj presided. MCF general manager (projects) N Ramesh Bhat and SDM College of Business Management principal Dr Devaraj K were present.
