Mangalore, Jun 11: Nagarika Seva Trust (NST) and other non-governmental organizations in the district have urged the district in-charge minister, J Krishna Palemar to fulfill the promises made by the BJP on the issue of establishment of environmentally hazardous industries in the coastal belt.

As the BJP has risen to power in the state, it has must fulfil its promises. During electioneering, party leaders K Monappa Bhandary and Shankar Bhat had termed Petroleum and Petro Chemical Industrial Region (PCPIR) project and Mangalore Special Economic Zone (MSEZ) as real estate business in real sense and had said that these projects do not contribute to the development of the twin districts. They had pledged to vehemently oppose these projects, stated a press release.

The government has to now take immediate steps for scrapping PCPIR being set up in the district and also convert the proposed coal-based plant into a gas-based one, the release stated.

NST president K Somanath Nayak has appealed to the government to initiate steps to de-notify 1,800 acres of land acquired for MSEZ project. He also said that NST will fully support Krishi Bhumi Samrakshana Samiti and the gram panchayats which have passed resolutions against setting up of MSEZ.
