M'lore: Over-loaded Mines Trucks in RTA Net - 220 Lorries Seized, Fined

Mangalore, Aug 19: Transport department has seized a total of 220 mine lorries since November 2007 for violating the Motor Vehicles Act and has collected Rs 15.75 lac from them.

According to a release from Regional Transport Officer D Sadashiva, the seized over-loaded lorries will be released only after the Geological Department imposes separate fines on them. The department has also collected Rs 25,000 from each lorry as fine imposed by the District Task Force Committee, making it a total sum of Rs 19.15 lac.

The release stated that though the number of over-loaded lorries has considerably been reduced due to strict regulations, their movement is going out of control as ports have been closed in neighbouring district and states. This has resulted in a traffic block on Shiradi Ghat.

'District administration was contemplating to ban mines lorries under City Corporation during day time and on Shirady Ghat during the night, release said. It also added that stringent action would be taken against the mines lorries if they continue to violate the traffic rules and action would also be taken against the permit and driving license.

    In my last letter to the editor of Daiji world I had discussed about these mine trucks. I travel every weekend from Bangalore to Mangalore and back. The very root of the problem on shiradi ghat is caused by mine trucks and bullet tankers. And I am a witness to thier demonic ways every weekend. I am ready to accompany your correspondent on a weekend and show you what the mining trucks do. I have seen one day a block for about 2 kilometers. When a few of us went to investigate

    I saw a whole lot of these trucks parked here and there without any basic manners causing the block. Another block investigation we saw a trucker fast asleep in his truck on the middle of the road. Now the issue has gone so much into our heads that we who travel this route regularly never bother, but instead listen to music on our mobile phones to spend the night. What can one do when our politicians are busy with no accountability shown towards the plight of the common man.They will know the problem only if they travel this road with thier wives and kids. 220 lorries in 240 days. What an insult to the individual ability of the department concerned.Hello department, can you come with me to panambur, or shiradu ghat or bikampady area.

    I will get you not less than 220 overladen mine trucks in one single day.My friend who works for a bank as a recovery agent does much better. He seizes atleast 2 mine trucks everyday.Shame on your guys. End of the day this is a country which is a democracy of thives. So this is just going to be a endless list of dejected complaints. Pakistan is terrorised by Taliban we are terrorised by these truckers and our politicians.

    The best way to charge the over loaded trucks is to get the information from the port authorities and find out how much ore has been offloaded by the each truck. The RTO  can issue the fines based on this rather than staging the drama in front of the public

    This news item is a real joke- to say that 220 overloaded mine trucks have bben seized over 240 days means one truck a day.Nearly every mine truck arriving at Mangalore is overloaded-why is it not possible to force every truck at loadpoint to have a big poster on its side having the type of ore and amount in kgs marked- eg IRON ORE FINES 46 PCT 13680 KGS NETT- and if at any point there is doubt on its veracity the public can call in to the RTO/Traffic Police with the number of the vehicle which can then be checked at weigh bridges enroute.

    This way the public will bcome vigilantes to protect their roads. If 25K fine is imposed on each overloaded lorry then the fine for 220 lorries should be 55 lakhs not a little over 19 lakhs. In addition to fines, the lorry should be impounded for at least a month so the owner is made to suffer with no usage of his vehicle- this way they will ensure that there is no overloading.

    Mangalore RTO can set up a special team/brach at mangalore port so that they can accurately calculate and fine the drivers accordingly. The district RTO should come up with progressive fining like the different tax slabs for different income earners.
