Davangere, Sep 6: Speaking after conferring awards to teachers at a ceremony held here for holding state-level teachers' day celebrations and handing over state-level teachers awards here on Friday September 5, chief minister B S Yeddyurappa confessed that the state exchequer does not have funds as of now.

The function was organized at Srimati Paravatamma Shamanur Shivashankarappa Kalyana Mantap here. The chief minister was responding to a memorandum submitted to him by the Association of Secondary School Teachers, complaining of the step-motherly treatment being meted out to them by the Fifth Pay Commission. Making the confession, the chief minister asked the teachers to give him some time before the government could rejuvenate its resources again, before attending to their problems.

"The government is thinking of including physical education in the school curriculum. If this materialises, our state will be the first to include physical education in the curriculum," he said.

There has been a markable decline in the number of persons continuing education after completing SSLC. Teachers need to give special attention to this issue. Teachers too need training to improve the quality of education and update their knowledge. Industrialist Azim Premji has mooted the idea of setting up of a separate Teachers' University. The government is prepared to extend all help to make this happen, he revealed.
